I just picked up a Moogerfooger Ring Mod pedal to use with some synths and I don't quite get it.

It seems like the LFO is only noticable when I have the switch set to HIGH and I'm not exactly sure what I am doing with it.

Plus the CARRIER IN input. Is this for an audio signal (such as another synth?) or is this for just voltage?

Any suggestions on good uses for the Ring Mod? I am strickly synths and samplers.

It does sound really good though but I just don't get what the ring mod is used for....I've been doing a vibrato effect and liking that but there has to more to it than that...

A ring mod takes two waveforms and multiplies them. They're good for creating metallic and bell-like tones. This may help: http://reaktorplayer.wordpress.com/category/ring-modulation/ Read the first paragraph.

in low setting LFO has little to no effect.

In low setting RM works like a tremelo
in high setting as a FM vibrato of some sort

Its all explained in the manual of the MF102 ?? Very well imho.
You can DL it from moogmusic.com if yours came without one.

The carrier input in no CV input but audio, you can put any audiosource into it for extraordinaire efx

I think I'm getting it a little bit more...I tried plugging my LBB synth into the CARRIER IN and got some weird results!

Thanks for your help!

If you had a Theremin available You could plug it into the audio in jack. Then you could use one of your synthesizers and put it's output in the "Carrier In" jack. This will defeat the internal Oscillator. You could also plug a hot line level signal such as a shortwave radio into the Carrier jack and probably get the sound Pere Ubu used on "30 seconds over Tokyo" at the End of the song. You could of course plug one of your synthesizers into the Input and have one go into the Carrier. Just make sure the Carrier one has a Sustained Tone, but you've probably already figured this out...

What is the Carrier In jack and Carrier Out jack, or rather what do they do? I use the moog ring modulator with a guitar and send it in and out of the audio jack and then into my amp, so I've never used them, nor do I know what they do? But that is interesting, I'm building a dot.com synth, can I incorporate my ring mod and other fooger into the synthesizer?

-Also, my favorite setting for the ring mod w/a guitar is 75% LFO, switch to sine wave, switch to HI, really slow rate, mix at 4 and a somewhat higher frequency. This makes the "clean" signal sound as though there are small higher frequencies spinning off of the signal's sustain.

The carrier oscillator provides the tone that is modulated by the second input (guitar, in your case). The waveform is most likely a sine wave. The Carrier Out would allow you to use that waveform as an audio source. To experiment, try plugging it into the audio input of another pedal. The Carrier In would allow you to use an external sound source to be modulated. The best results would be another waveform from an oscillator module, but you could experiment with pretty much any sustained sound source.

A sine wave is probably the classic carrier oscillator for a ring mod, but you can change the tone of the effect by inputing a saw wave, square wave, etc. Or by sending the carrier tone out to a filter or your MURF and then back into the carrier in. I'm not sure 100% of these ideas would sound great, but I'm just trying to toss some ideas out there.

Cheers,
Brian

I wish the moogspace site was still up
there used to be a document on there called 'lord of the ringmod' that went into great detail various ways to use the moogerfooger ring mod.
they even went into details on how to use the carrier osc as a 4th osc for the voyager (triangle only)

I think there is a yahoo group somewhere that holds all the archives, but i fucking hate yahoo groups so i dont go there.

I love the sound of my mooger ring mod. I have had mine in storage for a couple of years but after moving and rebuilding the studio i have been using it again and loving it.
My only complaint about it is when you are using it with a voyager via the osc/mix loop, the output gain is WAY too low. You can compensate by turning up the drive, but it seems that the drive amplification is pre, not post.
What i did in my setting is to use a small behringer mixer (Xenyx 502) to boost the post levels back to modular gain levels to avoid the distortion you get when using the drive on the mooger.

I've got an analog theremin AND a shortwave radio so I am going to try both of those tonight!

Lord of the RingMod is available on the group "Knob Tweak".

You can put CV into the Frequency input and use the Oscillator out as an extra Oscillator. You can also do this with the Freq Box and the Lowpass Filter (if you self oscillate it). The FreqBox is my favorite oscillator because it has an envelope follower on the audio input, which you can put an envelope signal or adjustable drum sound into to get a decent envelope.

I searched all over for Knob Tweak and couldn't find anything...it's not listed on Google?

Does anybody have the file they could host here and we could download it?

I have to disagree about the LFO not having much effect when you're in "LO" mode. As has been said already, "LO" mode is essentially a tremolo - set the LFO at a slower rate than the Modulators's frequency and you get a variable-rate tremolo. Very cool effect that you can't do with any other tremolo I've ever seen.

I also recommend the $30 Moog expression pedal - plug that into any of the top row of jacks for live tweaking while you play guitar (or use both hands to tweak your synth knobs).

If you got a drum machine or any percussive patched, don't forget to run it through the ringmod too.

min arrived this afternoon,, afterwork I came home, plugged it into POD XT2 Live and my recorder HA-cha!

oh .......yes, plugged a synth running an arpeggio pattern into the carrier in ,I think and it was fun too. my standard tele with dimarzio hum canceling pick ups sounded nice just using the RM drive

I would hate this thing if it sounded thin and brittle, harsh raspy but it doesn't do many of these common harsh noise antics even when cranked it remains

I got mines a week ago and it's juicy lucy! applause applause applause
career in , what ever audio that goes in, carrier in, becomes the carrier.
I have a Roland SH201 SYNTH, the ring modulator worked great with the synth.. Even when just using the unit running the synth through the RM turned off and playing with the drive cool things happen.
just mella and take your time, enjoy yourself and the exploratory diversion.
If you look at those monsta' modulars these guys use most companies offer RM's for the beasts they offer.

If you plug an expression pedal into the Carrier In, you can use it as a volume pedal or manual tremolo; at about 2.5v (use the exp's taper if it has one)you get a linear volume sweep from heel to toe, and with a full 5v you'll get full volume at the halfway point of the sweep, and the a quick drop off toward toe down. With an MP-201 controlling it, you can send it ADSR envelopes and use it as a faux VCA.. or send it other waveforms for different tremolo patterns, etc.

If you split your signal and send one to the Input and the other to the Carrier In (you need to boost it though, so-so results from an instrument level signal into the Carrier) you get a +1 octave output. (and other divisions if you use a harmonizer to send the carrier different pitches)

try splitting your guitars signal where one signal goes to the moogerfooger audio in and one goes to the carrier in, and mess with that with the lfo off and the mix cranked all the way wet, works best on HI and sweep around the frequency until you're smiling.
Really cool bit crushed kind of thing, single notes are sizzley and intervals freak out dissonantly, except 5ths and fourths which sound amazing.

The ringmodulator realy shines with the CP-251 cv control unit.
I've made with my KAWAI 100F and a phaser+memoryman dlx real weird sound and put that in the carrier in of the MF-102. Than the CP-251 with the S&H in the lag generator and that in the offset mixer with the LFO out of the MF-102 in the mixer and with the other S&H output in a attenuator and that also in the mixer with the noise to the other attenuator. Than the mixer positive out in the freq in of the MF-102 and the negative out in the amount in of the LFO. The result was we're not worthy
