So, I don't know about you, but I'm getting pretty tired of the standard blues and white

Yes, there are already phpBB themes available, but I have modified the forum code so much, it would be a ton of work to shoehorn them into here...

However... It's not so tough to use the current theme ('subSilver') as a template, and then create a whole new theme by modifying it.

But, I am just NOT a graphics and colors dude. If *YOU* are, I would love it if you would contribute a theme!

To start with, look at this image:

(note: this image appears 'cut off' at the bottom, but it's all there. "Span Class 3" is the last item on the form)

To make the simplest theme, you'll specify the new forum colors, fonts and settings as shown in the image above. You'll have to write down them all in a text file, and send it to me, and I'll enter them all into the forum admin console as the settings for a new theme.

(Edit: I've included a '.cfg' file (it's a standard text file) in the zip linked below - you can edit this to supply all the variables from the above chart, this makes it easier on you and me, thanks)

If you want to go 'all the way' and modify the bars, buttons, etc. using your image editor, this would be the ultimate, a complete new theme!

You'll need to download this zip file (422kb):

Inside you'll find a folder full of images, which also has a subfolder with a few more images inside.

You'll need to keep all the same images in the same folder paths, with the same filenames. But you may modify the image part of it all you want. You may choose to modify some, but not others. What each image is for will be obvious when you look at them.

So if you are the kind that is into skinning and stuff like that, I salute you! If you feel like taking this stuff and making a new theme, I will be happy to add it to the forum. Right now there's only one theme, but when there are multiple ones available, users are able to choose what theme they want to have when they are logged in - so if some people don't like a new theme, they can stick to the old one.

Anyway, just a thought, I don't know if anyone's interested, but I wanted to make the offer and put the resources to do it out there. Thanks!

That's right. Here's the deal -

Take this stuff, you now have until Midnight (EST, GMT -5:00) on February 14th to submit me your settings and/or modified image packs.

Ill then enter them all into the system (if anyone submits early I'll put them up as I get them) - and I'll set up a forum poll - everyone can vote on their favorite one.

All the themes can stay in the forum for people to choose from....

... but the chosen winner gets a $100 credit at the purveyor of their choice, courtesy of me. You tell me where you want to buy, AH, BCM, ModCan, whatever, and I'll send them a hundred bucks towards your next purchase.

I'm thinking the deadline might be tight with December always such a busy time, so Ill extend it by one month - deadline is now Midnight January 31, 2010! Hopefully that's long enough to give a chance to anyone who's interested.

one other rule, you can't just rip-off an existing theme and submit it!

If you take elements from existing themes (except the default one of course) you need to make sure that:

1) the original theme designer released their work under a license allowing you to re-use it in this fashion

and

2) you must credit the origin of the material when you submit your theme

ok, one last thing - I've just updated the .zip file... it now also contains the .css page (if you want to edit that), as well as a .cfg file, which can be edited in any text editor. This file contains all the settings from the image chart in the first post from this thread - please use that file to specify the new colors, this saves me having to type them all in. Thanks.

I didn't change the smaller incidental icons in the main folder but redid all of the icons in the subfolder titled 'lang_english' - they seemed like the more important icons so I focused on them. I had fun. razz

This site has colour palettes of all different kinds. AND you can read the hex directly off there for each of the given palettes.

Should be a good starting point for anyone wanting to give this a go with out being all hexxy in their hedz wink

I feel kind of bad though 'cause Muff started this competition to get a new color scheme rather than icons... hopefully this will still happen.

I got a thrill out of loading the template for the first time just then! Now I'll have to got hunting around for incidents of the less common icons. Cheesy!

I've been using this theme ever since it was uploaded, and I like it more and more all the time. Lots of little surprises and treats - I really recommend everyone try it out for at least a few days It's peanut butter jelly time!
