I'm guessing VSF stands for 'voltage sensitive filter,' but don't know for sure. Whatever it stands for, does a VSF differ from a voltage controlled filter, or is it just a matter of semantics?

maybe "Variable State Filter"?

(some context might help.. where exactly are you seeing the reference to VSF?)

^ I agree.

VSF (I have heard it called SVF - state variable filter) is just a VCF that includes different modes, like high pass, low pass, band pass, all in one module.

As opposed to to a module (or pedal, or whatever) that has only one state available (i.e. only low pass).

eg:

I see the term "state variable filter" used mostly for filters where the response is continuously adjustable from lowpass through bandpass and highpass.

the state variable filter is named after the math behind it, which is why it does(n't) make sense. depending on your perspective, of course. help

you do normally say state variable filter so this is probably from a serge filter being a variable slope filter.

Sounds like someone is making up their own abbreviations despite svf being used occasionally.

Also there are very if any genuine continuously adjustable filters. Designs out there do that, but generally via mixing and inverting multiple responses.
