Hello Chaps

First post here, hope you can help.

I recently i was made jobless and became a student. This is no big deal, all it means is i can't buy modules like crazy anymore because money is tight...

Sooooo... Each module purchase will be a stealthily planned, crafty operation!

Has anyone got or tried the Doepfer A-137-1 Wave Multiplier or the Mark II version, A-137-2? I listened to some of the sound samples and they sound pretty good but certain sound samples only give you so much information. If that makes sense?

It's got lots of CV stuff which looks awesome.

Obviously, I'd love to get a Bananalogue Serge WVX they seem to have disappeared.

Any other euro-rack Wave Multiplier suggestions?

Cheers!

Heya,
Before I go on a rant, I'll start off by saying 'it really depends on what you're going for'. With that out of the way I can say that this is one of my favorite modules and all around distortion units that I own. I'm into really aggressive and heavy synth/guitar sounds and the 137 has a wide range from crispy to apocalypse. I've talked to Dieter and asked what were some of his favorite modules and this was in the top 3. How that relates to you, I don't know. This is one of the few non-utility modules that Doepfer does right!
While all the Doepfer examples kinda blow, this is probably the most informative sample to me: http://www.doepfer.net/A100_sounds/A137_3.mp3

About the A-137-2, this thing might be epic when it finally lands, I would wait and see how much Doepfer decides to sell this thing for.

It's cool. Really great for adding crazy animation to slow CVs.
I must admit I don't totally understand what's going on, I need
to get it on a scope to better see what it's doing.

Welcome!

The STG Wavefolder is going to be in Euro format.

I have both the WVX and A-137 and would keep the latter over the WVX. It goes much further in tone shaping from really angular to overblown. I'll definitely give the STG Wave Folder a try too though I imagine that'll be a one trick pony.

The A-137-2 is more akin to the Cyndustries Saw Animator so I'd not see it as competition with the A-137-1.

i've read nothing but good things about the a-137...they turn up used now and then, haven't taken the bait (yet)...always wondered how an electric bass would sound through it....

Here's a quickie that I did using the saw out of my Cwejman VM-1.
The first sound is the pure saw then it is fed into the 137 and manually adjusted. About halfway, I start plugging LFO's one by one into into each of the four cv controllable parameters.
http://thedeepelement.com/a137.mp3

This is a quick example just to show what it can do to a saw! Imagine more complex patches!

Thanks guys!

I'm sold on the A-137. I'll be picking one up in my next order! She purrs...

The STG Wavefolder looks interesting...

The CVs on the A-137 is the carrot on the stick!

Surachai, Thanks for the sound samples.

Nice work chaps!

That example got you motivated Soy?! You're easy! No worries about the example, as you can tell it took no more than 10 minutes to record and post.

Hooray!

The A137 wave multiplier turned up today...

Very very nice... Growls, purrs... All the good stuff.

"How did i ever get by without it?..." My girlfriend pointed out i say this after every recent purchase but what does she know!

I also got a A-132-3 Dual VCA. Very nice clean VCAs, a big improvement on my A-131 VCA.

I will be buying another soon.

Cheers doods!

Congrats - its a v cool module.
I also have the STG Folder, they're two very different beasts, the STG is more for growly deep mid-range stuff, the A-137 is great for crispy/brittle sounds.

What elemental said. Very different sound from these two.

I finally fired mine up last night (arrived on monday) and WOW!

I wish I would have bought this guy a long time ago. It has a huge wide range of sound (and thereby a little touchy to control) and once you dial it in, you get some amazing timbres.

I've just been using it with a sine wave source too, I can't wait to see what this thing does to drums.

Using a VCA on the input signal also yields some really great results. I was using the A-132-3, with the level up a little way so that the sine wave input wasn't completely silent, and then had a M10 opening that up very slowly. That combined with a Vulcan modulating various of the 137 parameters was timbre-shifting bliss.

I'll upload some demos. Promise. I'm planning some good blog updates for this weekend.

same here - controlling the input level, combined with the harmonics control add some NICE waveshaping.
