I'm over it. Just finally got the chance to record/digitize some vinyl. Used a new but slightly broken in, good quality needle, with the table set up properly, and the 12"s were never played before.
End result? It sounds worse and muddier than the 320 mp3 I had of the same track. Less high end and the stereo field is not as wide.
Seriously, if I can help it I'm never buying a record again. Or a cd. Completely sold on downloads of wavs and looking forward to pluggin into the future virtual tactile world and thumbing through my crates. |

For future builders and IKEA newbs: Read the instructions. If you find the instructions too difficult, then perhaps you should get professionals to do it. HINT: The big long boards go *horizontally* and the little spacer boards go in *vertically* - I see that both failed EXPEDITs are essentially set on their sides. |

| Quote: | If I may weigh in as someone who's mastered albums for a living for 10 years:
Going by all meaningful specs, digital is better. Lower noise, lower distortion, better in basically every way. But, in almost all circumstances, LPs sound better. Why is this?
The physical nature of the LP limits how hard you can push the audio onto it, much like analog tape. Too much limiting, too much high frequency content, too much out of phase bass and you will at best get an unplayable disc and at worst burn out a $12,000 cutter head. The limitations of analog force engineers to make musically reasonable decisions about tonality and dynamic range.
Digital, in contrast, will let you do anything you want. Limit something until it's nothing but a FM'd square wave? Sure! Crank 9kHz until the highhats and vocal sibilance make you want to cry? Go for it! Compress everything until ppp and fff are within a half dB of each other? No problem!
When I think about the reasonably good sounding mixes clients have demanded that I make as loud as possible to be 'competitive', it makes me want to find another job. The trend of 'everything louder than everything else' has completely ruined the sound of CDs. There is some hope. I have had more clients come to me saying they want their record to sound it's best instead of it's loudest, especially since the Metallica 'Death Magnetic' debacle. I mastered my album half as loud as a 'normal' CD, and it sounds huge. Digital can be as great as the producers of the material will let it be.
The next time you listen to a CD and are depressed about how trashy it sounds, don't blame the format, blame the producer. |
This thread is really interesting! Ive come over some vinyl vs cs threads before. Honestly, I dont think i could do a blind test on my system and tell the vinyl from the cd. Im a relatively young guy 19, I grew up with vinyl for maybe the 6 first years, but after that it was cassetes and cds. When i was about 15 i started buying some vinyl for my dads old stereo, mostly because it was a really cool hi-fi system and i couldnt afford anything half as decent myself.

In the later years i´ve gotten myself a cd player ive hooked up to the system, but i still like buying vinyl for two reasons:
-It looks nicer! I have to admit that im a sucker for nice album artwork. I really like the format of the vinyl cover better than the cd cover for aestetic purposes.
-You have to listen to every track, this makes me apreciate the album instead of the individual tracks on the album. And! It increases the probability of me actually sitting through an entire noise record.

This is the latest record i bought, and i honestly dont know if it had been as enjoyable without the limitations of vinyl.
What i really love is when the you also get an mp3 version of the album with the LP! So you can put in on your ipod!

CDs don't have as much cred or ritual about them as vinyl, but they generally sound better (more information for the ears at least) and are more convenient.
MP3s are the most convenient of all, but probably the least credible because they reduce music listening to a mundane, unceremonious act of anonymous data-consumption.
None of them are perfect. _________________ www.endocrinesolution.net |

I think most people forget that vinyl is really all about the RIAA preamp EQ curve that gets applied to the signal. That bass boosting curve is what gives some of the richness that people crave about vinyl. Plus there is a bit of high-end loss. Its very interesting to compare cuts at 33 and 45 to hear the differing qualities in the bass and high-end. I notice a lot more people cutting at 45 to get higher sound quality and tighter bass. _________________ too i for your dm

i like vynil i enjoy playing once in a while some records , but last time i bought one was about 4 years ago, lately i enjoy finding new music on youtube.
on the other hand listening classical music i think is better to listen the live performance in a proper room with proper musicians than listening classical music on vynil or cd or mp3's , also is more fun to listen or electronic music in a big club than in your room , so i guess for me all of them are important it just depens my mood and where i'm at. |

thats really awesome to 're-discover' your record collection after 10 years! I had a similar experience after 5 years moving to california with nothing. mostly excited about home-recording cassettes tho _________________ tw i t ter

I have nearly finished encoding all my CDs to FLAC now. Currently around 300GB. I have 2 x 2TB hard drives and a 128GB SSD. It's really nothing. Takes up about double the space my collection did when it was all MP3, but sounds a million times better. But that's all CD quality 16/44.
I know I started this thread with a different opinion, but right now I feel that a high quality (well recorded, well mixed, well mastered) audio file at 24/96 into a great DAC into a great pair of monitors beats any vinyl experience I have ever had, hands down. I'd probably need to spend a ridiculous amount of cash to get a similar quality vinyl chain, and would still be unhappy with the surface noise, clicks and pops, and lack of frequency response, dynamic range, and stereo spread.
Having said that, as audio fetish objects, vinyl can't really be beat. _________________ Hermetech Mastering | Discogs | SoundCloud | Bandcamp | Facebook | Pathmusick |

zombi thread is not dead and can not be killed _________________ What they do is this: They leak current in proportion to the frequency of the signal. The ramifications of this can only be truly appreciated when solving nodal current balances in the Laplace domain, unfortunately.

Fuckin great, guys. Thanks for bumping this. Thanks a lot. After I just spent the weekend arranging hundreds of books, records, sketchbooks, bins of cables, and other things on my 5x5 Expedit bookcase featuring no wood glue and several missing pegs.
I'm going to go breathe into a paper bag for a little while. |

As a DJ of 20+ years with a vinyl collection that could easily fill a storage space and then some... I'm sooo over it at this point. If I was a kid starting out nowadays I definitely would not go vinyl. First off where you gonna buy this vinyl from? Not too many legit spots left. Not to mention records are EXPENSIVE. Thats how you end up with a shit ton of records... you buy a 4 song EP. for just the one song you like and before you know it you've got a friggin mountain plastic in your studio. I still buy records, although be it a small amount JUST for sampling purposes. DJ stuff?, NO WAY. It took me years to finally take the digital plunge, but once I did.. I wondered WTF took me so long? I fuckin love Beatport. I can browse at my leisure and buy only what want. They even make suggestions customized just for me . Vinyl will always have a place. But its more of a nostalgia item and a luxury at this point. The technology is such now that it's almost impossible to tell the difference. And the crowd sure as hell can't tell that's for sure.(stuff like proper gain control is WAY more important)
ps. A young protege of mine recently got into DJing... it took me MONTHS to talk him out of going the vinyl/SL1200 route. He had it in his mind that only "real DJ's" used records.... (he's been watchin too much TV) All the "real DJ's"(you know the guys making 1000's a dollars a night touring all over the world) moved on years ago. Trying lugging a 50lb. record case around for a week. _________________ Gearing up to get down

| My hearing sucks, so cd's are fine with me. Plus, I drive 5-6 hours a week, so vinyl isn't practical. Plus, plus, vinyl has become annoyingly trendy the last couple years and driven the price of it up to 2-3 times what the same cd costs. I do like singles, though. |
