The MOTM-650 4ch MIDI-CV will be the 2nd retired module in 13 years, when
the last 8 in the cart are sold.

I have run out of stuffed boards, jacks and panels. It is cost prohibitive
to run more of this module based on the "sell rate"/maturity of the product.

The BLOWOUT price is $439ea ($60 off). The cart is updated.
(www.synthtech.com, click ORDER tab, click MOTM Assembled modules tag).

In order to complete all 8, I have to get more jacks from Singatron, and
they usually quote 7 week lead time. Also, due to Christmas/NAMM, these last
8 will not ship until Feb/March (based when the jacks get here, everything
else is sitting here ready to go).

The '650 support will always be there: I have extra parts, CPUs, LCDs, etc
for the next 20 years. Your investment is safe. After the 8 are sold, I will
post up the schematics and the *binary* CPU code (NOT the source code, I do
not have rights to it). If anyone wants a pre-programmed spare CPU (it's a
44-pin PLCC, in a socket) the cost is $12/free shipping. Email for details.

Also, in case you are wondering: no, I do not plan to "reissue" the '650. I
may offer another MIDI-CV but it will NOT have dual arpeggiators or tuning
tables. It would be stripped-down quite a bit. So again, the feature set of
the '650 will still place it on the top of the pile (despite the issues in
the current code). If there is another 5U MIDI-CV from me, it is at LEAST 6
months off, more likely 8-10. A MIDI-CV seems trivial at first until you
start putting in all the expected features. It gets big quick! Jeff & Neil
crammed every bit of RAM and Flash to get all those features in. Maybe
someday they will release a V 1.4 for the '650 (you can update the firmware
over MIDI using a Mac). But the hardware is costly (I just want to break
even with these 8) and the sale rate is low.

Lastly: for those of you that bought a '650 in the last 90 days: email me
and I'll refund you the new price difference.

Thanks to everyone for supporting my 'little hobby' for 12+ years. I am
planning for 2011 already. Time to go solder!

Paul S.

I second that! If you have a good sized rig, or plan to build up to one, then get one of these 650's before they're gone!

Damn it and the time of year - I won't be able to afford one of these at this great price until after they're most likely all gone. I guess I'll have to go 2nd hand for one.

It would be cool if there was like a "20% non-refundable deposit" deal that would hold one for 2 months. If you decide not to get one (or it's been over two months and the one that was held for you was bought by someone else) you can still use your deposit for some other fine Synth Tech product.

Just a suggestion! cool

Same here. I was totally looking forward to owning one of these once my system was big enough. sad banana

Well, I guess this just means when I get around to DIYing a CV keyboard, I'll just have to figure out how to integrate an arpeggiator! screaming goo yo

Glad I didn't sell mine when I needed the cash. If they last long enough I just may pick up a second.

I keep thinking about getting one of these to replace my encore expressionist. mostly for the arp functionality, esp. w/ internal clock. but I don't have or plan on getting any other 5u gear. basically means I need an enclosure for it and PSU, although I'm sure a cheap surplus supply will be easy enough to find.

anyone have thoughts on a small enclosure for this? maybe a little boat. how deep are these?

Bought 1. I didn't see an option to add the extra CPU for $12 in the shopping cart, but I'd like one as well.

Thanks,
Loyd

Loyd: send me an email to: synth1@airmail.net requesting that.

All others: if you want one at time of purchase, just put that in the Comment box.

Re; stand-alone: The unit uses the 6-pin MOTM connector with dedicated +5V. You will need:

+5V @200 ma
+15 @ 50ma
-15V @ 25ma

the depth is 6 inches. It ships with the cable, so just whack one end of it.

I love mine, and I've never had any of the problems that some people have reported. There are a few things you need to know in order to set it up properly. I wrote a blog post about it.

Paul, would you sell me one without jacks (and maybe also without frontpanel if you dont have one)? Would like to integrate it in my custom systems (with these flimsy mini jacks wink ).
Depends on what parts you have / you miss and how big the controllerboard is (i assume the jacks are wired and not soldered directly to the board ).

This reply was sent Jan 16th, now in the middle of May, any news? It's just a chip.

He's moving right now. Has announced that he'll be off the web and email for a while.

I'm about 85% unpacked, starting to ship small orders (panels, pc boards, rails, etc). Will be 2-3 weeks until the bench and equipment is set up and I'm back to a regular schedule.

I have bought a small panel run for the '650. They are $10 more which helps the cost of the panels ($40ea!). www.synthtech.com, click ORDER tag, then in upper left corner click MOTM - Assembled.

Setting up the workbench this weekend so I can start soldering again. Unpacking is 95% done, enough to get going.

You no doubt saw this on the MOTM list, but the target for delivery is mid-Oct.

No doubt I did! I'm an experienced motm customer, so I know not to be in a hurry. I'll pay my money, and get it when I get it.

Posted on his Yahoo list on 8/21:

Quote:
I am starting MOTM-650 build tomorrow, I am still waiting on some front panels but I have parts to ship most of the existing orders. I have blank pc boards, enough to make ~ 8 more units be fore retirement. But due to the
setup charge on the SMT machine, these last 8 would be $50ea more so not
sure I will run them or not.

The ones we (the first X ones) are waiting for had just missing jacks as far as i remember....

Edit: I did remember right

Quote:
In order to complete all 8, I have to get more jacks from Singatron, and
they usually quote 7 week lead time. Also, due to Christmas/NAMM, these last
8 will not ship until Feb/March (based when the jacks get here, everything
else is sitting here ready to go).

Not to excuse your wait at all (I am waiting for an order as well), but I did see this on the mailing on Monday:

I will have a 2-3 weeks "break" from Euro module assembly (I'm out and waiting for the assembly house). So, I will start back on the MOTM backlog. I received CA3280s from a new source, I will test them out in a '480 VCF and in a '190. I am just about 100% caught up in the prior 2.0 DIY orders. I plan to start shipping the '650s a week from tomorrow and if there any left over I will put them in the cart ~ 10 days. These will be more $$$ than before because of having to make a limited panel run.

I'm still adjusting to the grandbaby's schedule but woking again at odd hours like I did 18 years ago when my son was this age. Y A W N .......

Paul S.

So maybe (just maybe) you will see your order go out next week.

I can appreciate your impatience, but that's harsh. For the record, I'm happy to wait for my 650 to ship.

For me, the hard wait only begins then, as it travels across the Atlantic and then sits in a warehouse for weeks, until the customs people finally process it. very frustrating

From now on, you should send every order COD. Maybe we'll have a fighting chance of timely delivery.
You get paid when the products are delivered. d'oh!

I thought the card is only charged when the product ships.

He claims to be working on orders every day, which is cool with me. You just have to know going in that this stuff is handmade and can take a while. Same goes for boutique guitars and microphones.

I just put in an order for a 480. He said 8 weeks, but I'll get it when I get it. If you haven't ordered in a while, maybe you should put in an order for something. Support the format and maybe he will support us back with new modules. smile

In my experience, the card is charged when the item is ready to ship. However, if you use paypal then it goes out right away.

Yeah, I used a credit card. Apart from making sure I have the money in my account when the module ships, there's no problem. Goldfish

I have always gotten an email reply within a few days. However most of my orders were kits (sigh, I miss those) or MOTM 2.0.

with motm kits being available from bridechamber now, i think a quicker option might be to order one from them and pay someone to assemble it for you, if you are not able to assemble it yourself.

I have purchased beaucoup 2.0 stuff and it all shipped within two weeks. Some shit, like some parts I just got from Paul shipped one day after payment and arrived within two days of payment.

The only built stuff I have purchased were a power supply and patch panel. Those shipped within a month.

I had a few modules on order once, 300's, 440, 650, and I was able to cancel the order to and apply the funds to 2.0 stuff. I canceled around the two month waiting period give or take a couple of weeks.

Paul is always straightforward about the speed issue. I have found that he generally revises shipment times if you make contact with him and ask him what is up. He also posts updates to his work and life practically every week for as long as I can remember on yahoo groups so you get a sense of what is going on.

I get the frustration people feel. They're nice modules and you want what you pay for. It's just that this is a known and admitted thing. I don't think there is any solution. Didn't Shane even take different work and so there is no help now? From what I recall he has always delivered. Unlike other vendors who we are well aware, he always keeps in communication and doesn't seem to drop off the face of the planet when things get behind.

Anyways, just wanted to chime in with a little data and also my feelings on it. I do feel your pain though. I just don't think this will change for 5U stuff.

If you can't wait, buy .com or Modcan. You won't hurt my feelings (much) seriously, i just don't get it

BTW: I got 6 MOTM-650 board sets today from Shane the Tech, so these will ship later this week. Right now I am getting an order together for AH for a few Euro modules.

I always had good business with paul. Im even used for grants times wink

But here we ordered the modules in december, regarding paul there were just the jacks missing which should arrive in feb/march. So we have 9 months now, 6 more then expected.

Little bit long for soldering a few jacks (if the modules where not build that time and he had to setup a new assembly line it would be a different story).

Anyway, if we get them soon i will be happy again smile

Is it possible to cancel an order? If you're really that bothered by the wait, would you do that?

For me, it's not even about canceling an order. I'm so burned out on dealing with this business model. I stop at the drooling stage of the buy. I won't even place the order to begin with.

So why are you reading this thread? What do you care how other people spent their money? confused

Wait, Ron. Are you saying that you're doing all this pissing and moaning about synthtech and you don't even have any orders with them? Are you on some sort of vigilante vendetta or something?

Yup. Whatever.

Paul's business practices are REALLY well documented - any kind of research by potential new buyers is going to turn up the stories of his delays and long waits. But it will also turn up that everyone's gotten what they paid for. And his email communication is great - I've gotten a reply to everything I've sent over the last 8 years. Those that complain about communication are expecting weekly status report emails, which doesn't happen folks - also well documented. And/or people who don't know how to spell their reply email address or work their spam folder. And yes, order cancellations are accepted and even encouraged in some cases.

Except for one instance, all my dealings with Paul have been fairly quick and successful. There was one time I ordered a handful of kits right after they had been discontinued, and the wait for the last 2 of these was 2 years. But during that time I didn't panic or get in a snit (mostly) - Paul was very quick to reply to my monthly inquiries, and everything got here eventually.

2 year kit wait = 988 orders in 2 weeks (unexpected) + Paul Haneberg's stroke (unexpected, he was doing my kitting for me) + getting laid off from day job.

There's no real point in 'warning' everybody. The list of people I've pissed off is endless. Hell, I've pissed off everyone from The Chemical Brothers to Jeff Rona/Hans Zimmer to Depeche Mode to Joe Walsh to Ron S. I am an equal opportunity pisser-offer. seriously, i just don't get it

It's *always* been a hobby. It's been a fairly successful one, but it's something I do in my spare time. Everyone else I'm aware of in 5U, they do it full-time.

Again, why beat the dead horse? Why does it even matter to you at this point?

Just wanted to add a positive comment for Paul.
I had ordered several kits in the past and they all came within reasonable time ( a few months is very reasonable I think). It must be quite the job to sort out all these individual components and pack them so professionally and well documented.
A wrongly delivered part got replaced in no time.

Thanks for all your effort Paul, if there comes another very last batch of the MOTM-650, I hope I will be able to order one of these.

I will have a count on Monday afternoon how many 'leftover' parts/pc board/panels I will have. I will then announce here/other places and put them into the shopping cart at www.synthtech.com These will take between 2-3 weeks to ship as I have to order additional LCD displays (see next paragraph).

The price will be up a bit due to my increases. Just for fun I looked last night at the IC pricing and my eyeballs popped out. I bought these parts about 7 years ago, and most of them have doubled since then. The worse-case was the little LCD display: it went from $7 to $18!

Well, I have put 2 MOTM-650s in the shopping cart at www.synthtech.com for $499ea. These are available for sure, there may be more later but I will have to have some ribbon cable assemblies made up and my supplier takes 2 weeks at least. I will hold the price at $499.

FYI, the software programmer for the MOTM-650 posted to the Yahoo list this morning that he's got a beta version for the next firmware update. Of course, he's been talking about this for YEARS, but it made my hope for this update go from a 1 to, oh, a 1.2 at least.

Current FW revision is 1.3. The new version will be 1.4

If you have a PC, there is a utility to Flash the firmware over MIDI. No Mac app. If you are a PC-hater, I will do it for $10. Once it's available.

On the subject, I'm going to build mine as a standalone unit, and a 900 would be overkill for the power supply. Anyone have a link for a smaller power supply that will provide the +/- 15v and 5v? seriously, i just don't get it

Thanks in advance.

There are wall wart/line lump supplies that have all three voltages.

QPS2 power supply

Or search around for an old Elpac wall wart.

Thanks! I've found some Elpacs with 5v and +/- 12v, but no +/- 15v. I may just go with the QPS2, just to have the easy expansion possibilities if I want to add something down the line, and frankly, eliminating the wall wart is probably worth the extra $50 smile

If you are mechanically inclined, understand how to safely work with potentially dangerous AC voltages and don't mond some mild DIY you could make yourself something like a QPS2 inside a stand alone enclosure for about $50 if you buy a used or NOS Power-One off of Ebay:

Our very own Richard Brewster we're not worthy and one of the the pages that got me started down the path to blissful financial ruin! hihi

This is a good seller:

I just went with the QPS2. I'd wanted one of their reverbs anyway, so I killed 2 birds with one Paypal.

My 650 showed up today! Thanks Paul, it looks great.

I am getting more parts together to build another 20 or so MOTM-650s. These would be ready mid-November.

Do these include the ones ordered in July, like mine, that were promised in September/October? Or is this another batch of unordered ones? Just curious - I can wait...

The '650s on order as of today will all ship in October *if* the cable assembly house will ship me a few more assemblies. I think they are slow and that's saying a lot.

I was referring to 'unordered' ones. I have ordered more ribbon cables and will have to have more pc boards stuffed (I have the blank boards already). The price will hold at $499 even though my cost went up ~%30 since last build (the DAC in there is now like $23).

a) V1.4beta is available, that fixes the 2 main issues with V1.3 (assigning CC00-31 to AUXs).

If you are not on the MOTM yahoo group and want a copy, PM me. You will need a WinDoze PC w/MIDI interface to do the update.

b) I am building 12 additional MOTM-650s for realease *when* V1.4 is finished (guessing late Nov). They are in the shopping cart at www.synthtech.com

I have a Linux-based machine, so I guess I won't be able to update the firmware. waah Unless...the updater simply sends a sysex msg? I can easily do that myself.

a) no, ther is a handshake w/CRCs and timing involved

b) I will update the FM for $15 if you ship the unit to me. But if not on the beta team, just wait until it's final. I will announce here when ready to go.

Having received mine, I now understand what you meant when you told me FPE's heads would explode if I tried to get them to make a Dotcom format panel for it. It is a lovely module. w00t

Wow, thanks Dave! A great resource there. And why haven't I ran into your blog before now? Hmmm? And what the heck are you doing living an hour down the road from me and I never knew it? Hmmmmmm???? Too many questions.

BTW, my 650 is up and running great!

but your not making any more after that right? anyway I'm probably not adding midi to my system for a while so no worries. I might scoop up a kenton with USB at some point. if I can get my organ/synth working I'll have a CV controller.

No.

In order for more to be made, 3 things would have to occur:

a) I would have to run more CPU boards through SMT assembly. I do have the bare boards. There is a $250 fee + parts cost + ~$14/board for the assembly.

b) I am out of front panels. So I would need to order more.

c) due to price increase of the LCD (it went from $7 to $21...really!) and other parts like the DAC, the price would jump up to $529 ea.

To even consider doing this, I would need 15 pre-sold ones. I don't know if there is a demand for 15 or not.

I'm still kicking myself for not picking one up but at the time cash was tight. If there is a demand I would be in for one even at $529.

I'm going to hold out a couple months for the Grove module; it is exactly what I want and John told me there are a small group of modules 'in process' right now.

It's crazy how there are no other multi-channel options available in 5u other than the Modcan which is $450 more (though admittedly more full-featured.)

I have a Maddox/Elby/Oakley PolyDAC and however much I love the thing, the 650 kills in terms of features.

Is anyone running 1.4b? What are the changes? Does it seem stable? I have 1.3 and it's been running great, though I'm only using it as a 1-channel device.

Paul - I would be interested in an MOTM-650. Couldn't commit (financially) for another few months, but it sounds like you wouldn't be able to start working on them until the end of the year, anyhow.

The #1 bug fix in V1.4 is being able to assign CC messages to the AUX outputs.

Huh, all I use the aux outputs for is to send CC1.

Do you mean I could send different CCs to all of the Aux outputs individually? If so, where do I sign up?

Yes, V1.4 lets you assign up to CC31 I think (been a while since I looked). Each AUX can be a different CC message.

The current V1.3 lets you assign the "fixed" controllers OK (like Mod Wheel).

If you have a PC you can flash over new firmware. Else I have to do it.

Cool, I'll dig through the Yahoo list to find the info on how to flash it. I have a PC in the garage.

I'm in for another, I'm thinking about a "portable" setup (as portable as 5U gets anyway).

Yeah, could be an interesting trial for Kickstarter, if it works out maybe the same can be done with the Morphing Terrarium, etc in 5U.

Well that is a thought.

Q: does Kickstarter get a fee even if funding fails?

Just read something that says kickstarter charges 5% if funded and nothing if not funded.

No, because if the goal isn't reached, none of the pledges actually go through.

It looks like Amazon charges a credit card processing fee of 2-5% in addition to the Kickstarter 5%.

Yep. When I did a Kickstarter project recently, the final fee was around 8% total (Kickstarter + Amazon fees combined).

So going through Kickstarter would mean paying an 8-10% markup (the module's projected cost of $529 would creep up to about $560-570). I'd be willing to pay the extra markup if it meant there would be another run, but not sure everyone would agree. For a small run of 15 maybe it's easier to round up enough MW members.

I would lose 4% anyway but willing to only inch price up say to $539.

If you want to try the code (just to see if it runs without crashing) it's at

www.synthtech.com/m650

It's the sfuu.exe file and the data file is the .sfi (I may need to put the V1/4 SFI but again just to see if it goes). You need BOTH of MIDI IN and MIDI OUT connected for the CRC handshaking.
The '650 has a upgrade firmware page. It does work over PC as I've done it several times in the past.

I'm sure there are others who are up for new MOTM modules.
Or even re-issues.
