my undying thanks to stk who scripted up a way to embed soundcloud into phpBB2.x and helped me get it going here... this is my number one biggest wish for the forum software, come true!!

thanks also sandyb for hooking this up with stk in the first place!!

it's simple, just use s tags in bbcode around the URL. I'm gonna borrow a nrdvrgr track (hope you don't mind!) to show you...

i think it has a problem with longer links.. when they go for more than one line and get wrapped it does something weird and breaks the code :(

so, those of you having trouble embedding soundcloud links just make sure you use short song titles in your soundcloud names or it won't work.

for example.. if your soundcloud link to be wrapped is:

soundcloud/blahblah

then you're fine.. but if you link is a long title like this

soundcloud/blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahbla hblahblahblah

then it won't work because the bbcode can't handle the wrap to the 2nd line for whatever reason.

the embeds don't work for me on ipad, nor on my linux desktop, but viewing the same widget on soundclouds site seems works fine. hmmm.....

A hacky workaround would be to put a link to the soundcloud url underneath the embed..

The embeds use Flash, there's no Flash on the iPad, Hence they wont work on iPad.

The Soundcloud site itself does not use flash for playback but some html5/js combo, not sure what it actually use.

Edit: Tested a few long urls, they cut at the exact same length, only 68 chars of the input url are used as url parm.

that wrap around problem with links is an easy fix. just parse the data so it strips the line break character before it goes any further converting the embeds. to find out exactly what the line break char is, just hex edit the data in a post that has line breaks in it. you'll find out if its just a BR (line break) or the BR+CR (line break followed by a carriage return). once you know the hex, you can convert to ascii or unicode and check your PHP syntax for the proper escape syntax for that char. line break might be listed as //BR or &CR or whatever. depends on the programming language

Yeah the long url thing is something I'll take a look at when I have a free moment. It's a weird PHPBB2.x thing. That's why Muff and I originally set the shortcode so, well, short.

They do things a little differently so I'm waiting on word back from them on a way to make things easier for the end user (ie you guys).

I've never been able to play the embedded soundcloud. I can see it, and when I go to soundcloud I have no problem listening there. So I've only been able to listen when people post links, not when they embed. Is there even a way to get the link from the embedding?

I'm using Firefox 8.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).

When I mouse over that link in the first post of the thread you link to, the URL shown in the status line of my browser doesn't have the space in it. Just in the text that is displayed on the page. I would guess that is so the displayed text won't stretch the page. But as long as the actual URL being linked to doesn't have that space, it will work.

Bumping this as stk has been kind enough to write an amazing new version of the sc embed code, which no longer uses flash and now works on iOS as well as fixes the URL length and word wrap issues encountered previously.

Amazing job! Thanks so much to stk - I think this one was a lot of work so he deserves some serious kudos!
