I'm just as big a fan of your R&B stuff Phil. I hope to hear more from you in the future (as the Ol' Fuckity fuck). I can't predict the future but if you ever decide to revisit the modular synth stuff then here is the place to do it. You've been an inspiration. _________________ OpenTape

I'm sad you'll be leaving, both electronic music, and the state of New Mexico.
Sad that you'll be breaking up the modular. You've built a nice instrument.
It has been fun watching your evolution with it.
Some great musical journeys have happened in your videos too.
You are one of the only synth guys on YouTube who has shown us more than your hands while you play your synth.

You will be missed! But do pop in when you can - I'll bet that you'll be back before too long. _________________ What they do is this: They leak current in proportion to the frequency of the signal. The ramifications of this can only be truly appreciated when solving nodal current balances in the Laplace domain, unfortunately.

even if you sell all of your modular hardware, don't hang up the lab coat. you'll need it for when you turn on Numerology (which fortunately you won't need to be selling!.)
sorry to hear you're in a bad spot. i hope things turn around for you. _________________ http://suitandtieguy.com

I wish you well in your future endeavors.
I can understand losing the energy sometimes. I lost it 10 years ago and went back to my love of guitar playing. Now I am back to both really.
I guess my issue lay with the fact that I had been using synths to make music (and a form of living) for 20 years and it hit me that I was drained (and wasn't really impressed with what was considered EM anymore) ... it's just not possible to keep going indefinitely. Everyone needs a break or change in life. I am sorry part of yours seems to come from personal reasons too. I hope these mend or get better.
Anyway, if your love of music is enhanced by hanging up the patchcords, then it is a good thing.
I am sure you will be back at some point though

Good luck following your musical muse.
I suggest that you don't sell your synth if you can help it. I find myself having a cold spell for a few months, then I get back to it as a nice break. Also when you have personal stuff go down it's tempting to sell everything only to regret it later on. But if you gotta do it for financial reasons, it's just gear. You can always buy more later, or not. _________________ http://www.jefflaity.com/studio |

Thank you, sir, for all the kind words. If you ever find yourself on the beaches of Southeastern North Carolina (which may sound like a lot of directions, but it really isn't) and the urge to toy around with a euro modular your are always welcome at my house. _________________ "Wait a month and buy from a fellow wiggler who's desperate for new modules." - Johnisfaster

as i sit here, and having just finished putting PCBs behind some MU P-L/LPF panels, and watching the Jimmy Smith live in franc 69 DVD, i'm reminded that i should chime in here again and say that you never really leave either world, they feed off each other.
i think if i were to focus on the organ or the electronic stuff exclusively they wouldn't be as interesting. on the other hand i find i need to work harder at both to keep things going. _both_ are important for perspective.
so i guess it's not any easy thing i say, but just a "i hear you" and "hang in there" which i should echo.
go get yourself a hammond organ and a leslie. you need them for the soul music, and they belong right next to the modular, in their right place by its side. _________________ http://suitandtieguy.com

Thanks for the thoughts. I do have a Roland VK-7 organ that I like pretty well and don't have the room or money for a Hammond/Leslie. My friend that passed owned a studio and had a mint B3 and Leslie. His son probably still has it as part of the estate. We talked about it but I'm glad we didn't buy it. We're planning on a long-distance move if/when we can and our kids will moving in with us as well. Space will likely be an issue for the perceivable future.
As far as multiple music endeavors, I hear you.
I still really enjoy Numerology and soft synths though when I get the urge to do abstract/electronic stuff. I'll probably miss the modular and other stuff at times but it won't stop me from enjoying making music ITB at all. I could spend months just learning all the things about Numerology that I don't know or under-utilize, especially the newest features.

Kinda weird to say this but I'm really selling out everything and getting out of the modular thing entirely.
Just another shift in life, as I'm thoroughly digging songwriting, live playing and recording with my live trio (with my wife). She and I are songwriting together and it's a blast, especially compared to earlier times writing by myself where it could get so struggly.
I'm also buying a bunch of softsynth stuff and will be as mad scientist as ever, musically speaking. I want to take my electronic music in a slightly different, more cohesive 'recordable' direction and maybe marry it up with some fractal flame animation stuff.
The modular knobs have been a blast, but there's still MIDI controllers and that can be a lot of fun- controlling 8 or 9 parameters of soft synths with one slider.
[Note to self: Build a 4-speed stick-shift 8-Ball MIDI controller]
I still want to hang around here with you guys though- most of ya!
You all matter to me a more than you might think. Like friends even.
Now party on, motherfuckers.

I'd say "bummer", but you sound so happy and positive about the transition that I shan't. And I'm glad you'll still be hanging out here.
All the best to you, Doctor. |

| It'll be good if you stick around. It's good to have people with a lot of experience in musical forms other than strictly electronic ones. Helps keep the rest of us grounded. |
