Could be a verification that you're really a human and not a bot.
That way bots can't flood the search function.

Could of course be a completely different muffly thing though...

because i'm an asshole and I wish everyone who comes to the site at least takes the time to say 'hi'. Limiting features for registered/posting users not only helps prevent abuse by bots and spammers but also encourages people to post.
