In philosophy, yes, in implementation, not so much. |

Similar to Buchla only in that there's a Mod Osc and Main. No analog wave or timbre shaping which is the main sound of the Buchlas. I thought I heard a while back that Scott liked the Nord Lead osc sound and modeled that. I heard the proto Donut at NAMM last year but don't remember much. It's changed much since then. I am also interested in his wavetable osc, the Piston Honda. I hope he throws some cool stuff into it; more 259e and not another Miniwave. _________________ http://www.REwireMusic.com

| I'm really interested in this pitch-tracking function. Buchla users, what's that all about? |

I'm pretty sure this is not emulating anything specific to the Buchla, at least, I don't think so. Scott mentioned really liking the sound of very erratic tracking between the two oscillators. I would imagine this means more and more inharmonic sidebands from the FM as you set a worse degree of tracking. _________________ dress yourself for the public. you now must exit your home and acquire a dental mirror and lubrication!

Sounds intriguing...I'm still very interested to see if you can over ride the modulation oscillator with, eg. a microphone & have that track the main oscillator. "Exterminate, exterminaaaaaaaaattttttttteeeeeeeeee!!!!!!"

Okay, I'm thinking I want the Hertz Donut. Anyone know the status of this project?
Here's a cloudy sound clip in case it hasn't been posted.

Yeah, I've actually been planning the layout of my modular and available rack space around the Donut for months now. Can't wait to hear some samples so I can make sure it is awesome as I am hoping... but I am sure it will be and more _________________ Prometheus Burning

Price will be in the neighborhood of an AFG. Should be ready for manufacture towards the end of the month. |

fuck it, let's hotlink that bitch! I *know* I need one of these!!!
Looks like The Harvestman is really honing his microprocessor skills with this one - all that buchla-esque switching looks rad.
If I won the lottery I'd be the first guy with a full system of these - like a bank of 4 or some shit.

I used to think about limiting my cases, I still think about it, but the addiction and the new modules coming out all the time say otherwise...
I can't wait to hear some samples. I'm hoping it FMs really well from gritty on the verge of white noise cat's screaming in heat all the way to pretty purring cat sounds.
But I have no free rack space. |

man. I have no money and no space.
but that is gorgeous, and would probably satiate 1 of my two remaining desires in my modular: a 261e and a serge oscillator, cause I have fallen for the way they sound..
or at least I could tell myself that it'd satiate my desire for a 261e...
and anyway, at this point, it'd be too much. I should be grateful for the already-wide spectrum I have. too many options as it stands. can paralyze |

I'm torn between the Donut and Polivoks. I'm leaning towards the Polivoks since its cheaper and smaller. Once some sound demos are released, I'll know for shure if the Donut is too sexy for my shirt. _________________ Heavy Lids |

yeah, i'm really curious about the polivoks. hertz donut is a bit too rich for my poor-ass blood. but i have found that the couple of modules i paid serious money for have been really satisfying and deep. i did dig the sample. and i am a total sucker for bad/worse/stupid. |

My grandfather used to say "the best costs no more," and certainly when it comes to gear, that's true. Flipping cheap gear adds up after a while.
I just noticed that the Harvestman site boasts that this has compatibility with Livewire's x-mod and audio compositor expansions. Makes it an interesting alternative to a second AFG for something completely different, although the AFG's I/O is just about the sexiest thing in Euroland . . . |

As I'm sure the M30 will never see the light of day and even if it does I won't buy it, the Donut is gonna get my vote - old digital is the new analog man..... I really like the very digital VCO on the chimera BC8 too BTW, and have high hopes for the BCX
but hang on I'm skint and I haven't even got my AFG delivered yet - GAS!
Sorry to say it but I think the Donut is ugly as fuck - IMHO those black bars on the Harvestman modules make them look very cheap and nasty - and i know they are niether (well, nasty maybe )

They're planned for the future, although they've been in planning since the AFG was released over a year ago. I imagine Scott knows more than anyone else about how/if they are progressing towards release as I'm sure he worked with Livewire to integrate them with the Hertz Donut. |

Couldn't agree more. I give the same advice for gear as I give for handguns and tattoos. If you can't get what you want/what is ideal for the job/etc save your money until you can, don't get something lesser as a substitute. Hope that's summed up well, I just rolled out of bed, no coffee yet.
Also, I'm another one who's had a 'donut hole' planned out since I saw this. (The harvestman modules and the AFG are what finally got me to dive into euro). |

definitely, harvestman along with livewire, makenoise, and (unfortunately) plan B was what convinced me to jump to euro modular.
i was actually shopping for an analog poly before browsing AH's website and got sucked into the wallet drainhole that is the modular world. at first, i was not *that* interested at the modulars with .com formats etc. that leans more to emulating the moogish sounds--but after looking at the euro offerings, i realized that modulars is so much more than a monosynth! and that finally did it for me
aesthetically, i think harvestman is also one of the most attractive ... i'd much prefer (from pure form factor) a rack full of harvestman than, say, doepfer, asys, or plan B. another really company that gets my vote for best design is definitely makenoise, but livewire has its own classic '50's vintagey science instrument look that is sexy as well.
well, to each his own i suppose |

in terms of look, I find Doepfer, AS, ASYS and such ordinary, livewire classy/chic, Plan B got that biotech-slightly Gigerish look, Malekko mmm monolythic... as in millenial wisedom, FOH, Makenoise and Harvestman meaner than an oldschool punk rocker!!!

Ha! So awesome... I'm really looking forward to getting this.
I love the "DANGER !!! TERROR HORROR" on the PCB, as well as the aforementioned tracking titles. Awesome touch.
This module looks absolutely solid, and I love how it looks as well. My only gripe is that the "hertz donut" lettering on top doesn't quite seem to match the rest of the module's aesthetic, but that's not really important as it's just beautiful all in all.
Can't wait!! |

hertz donut spy photos from tonight:
the harvestman was kind enough to bring a prototype of the donut into my studio earlier this evening, and he had me at it for a few hours solid as well.
i'm cleared to share a couple of photographs, and write a bit about the experience, and, i do declare: it has left me astonished! i already miss this module.
the modulation oscillator is wonderfully implemented, borrowing a conservative and to my opinion ideal amount of buchla workflow in it's interface. comparisons will be frequent, i suspect, and rightly so: the simplest arrangement of parameters (sine or triangle on primary, sine or triangle on modulation, freq and amp as destination) does relate close to the 261e in similar configuration... not at all identical, but i found myself able to apply intuition earned from my hours spent on the e-series to developing timbres on the donut.
for me, the similarities end here, as the donut is... certainly a harvestman device in that way that only he can do things.
the waveform discontinuity is certainly new, providing a palette i've never once had at hand, with dramatically different results from waveform to waveform. complex spectra is achieved with a granularity in the travel of the parameter which is quite varied and quite dense; there is an enormous amount of wave-terrain to explore here, years.
the sync is well implemented, skittering pitch tricks and scampering phase are rewarding to configure and sequence. some of the formant structures i was able to draw out of the module sounded fantastic.
i could carry on about the ring mod as well... it is both 5,626 and 1,406.5 smiles wide, all at once. to my palette, it is beautiful to hear.
it is said that once the firmware is polished, i will be doing a bit of recording with the device, which the harvestman will slice to his whim and fancy and decide if it is nice enough to represent the module. i am not certain if this will come to be, as we are both busy folk... i certainly hope to have the opportunity, as i feel a bit bad to make such a post without audio to share. that, and, i am gutted to not have had more time with the hertz donut.
well done, governor! well done!
p.s. no, i will not explain the small pcb to the left. |

| So, it`s got a ring mod too? Anyway, I think the harvestman is making the most interesting modules at the moment, Hertz donut, polivoks vco, piston honda, and hopefully the high quality grain delay sampler thingie too... |

citizen mori, parts of your description of the Hertz Donut make me happy to have ears. Very evocative. With any luck I will be able to meet this VCO in person before to long.
Thankyou for the sneak peek & first impressions. |

Thanks for the review. I've been checking Analogue Haven for pre-ordering daily. Two of these will be mine. _________________

and it looks like i might be crossing the event horizon into the euro black hole because of Harvestman as well. At first it was just the polivoks filter. easy to justify not going into the euro format for only one filter... i mean thats a lot of expense for ONE filter.
but the dude just keeps making too much cool stuff. not sure how much longer i can resist.... |

Me too. Harvestman is totally what pushed me over the edge.
BTW, is your avatar a pic of one of Sarina Brewer's pieces? |

hints of what harvestman will be bringing out plus the malekko wiard stuff (and their own of course; I have two b:assmaster pedals) has been enough to make hesitant about selling my doepfer portable case despite selling all the plan b and eurorack modules that filled it _________________ looking for: Buchla 4 module powered boat;

Yes, she makes some beautiful and unique curios.
My ex took all my old pieces, I need to buy some more.
But something keeps taking all of my extra cash, I wonder what that could be? _________________ Audio resistance to perceived fascist tendencies

Good friend of mine has one of her Griffins. I've got microcephalic and hydrocephalic piglet specimins on top of one of my modular racks, right next to my (fake) 2 headed baby. The 2 headed piglet was very tempting, but I don't have the room for a 4 gallon jar. Every now and then she thins out her personal collection and will send out a mass email.
And yeah, most of my bonus checks go into gear as well. |

just got one... and if i had to chose ONE digital oscillator, this would be it. x2.
it sounds amazing, and it's laid out wonderfully. tempo sync CV on this and you have awesome stuff that sounds like well crafted automation. _________________ www.pro-modular.com | MW OpenTape | Instagram

i do apologize for iPhone audio... but i didn't feel like editing.
Hertz Donut is the only Oscillator voice being used. All VCO modulation is from the modulation VCO in the HD, and those are being modulated by a Doepfer A-147.
Hertz Donut is going through a Cwejman MMF-6 into a Doepfer 132-3 VCA, which is being opened by an MFB Dual ADSR (set to a short envelope time for most of the video).
Pitch control is provided from a random midi event inside Ableton Live being arpeggiated.
There is an Analogue Solutions HH88 in there here and there, and a drop of hits from the computer that were programmed.

I would buy another in a second. If I were not waiting for the make noise osc, it would be another hd. |
