So as not to clutter other threads, I figured this would be a good place to talk about component sourcing, suggestions, and group buys. _________________ ~flight

oh yeah.... forgot, i'd be into a group buy of some decent 1/8 jacks & plugs.
also, possibly some fancy-ass knobs that are pricey when a small amount are bought. maybe something like those used by Livewire or Modcan.
i did a search on vernier dials after i read chromium's reply & noticed some interesting knobs & dials on a site.... but they weren't cheap. |

Well, it was inspired by this thread, but I am always trying to track something down or will it into existence. My focus is usually euro-based, but I come across all kinds of stuff in my searches.

I need some jacks as well, don't need a group buy but I need to source some of the 1/8" jacks, either the ones used on the PB or the style like on the livewire or makenoise stuff. Just no cliff jacks.
Making some mults and a breakout box for volta. |

@ bar|none: The PB jacks are Mouser "Kobiconn" (their house brand) 16PJ137. They are nicely priced:
1: $0.29
10: $0.23
100: $0.20
500: $0.19
There is another jack that I forgot to mention in the other thread: PJ301B. It even has the shouldered pins paults!
I found a manufacturer that will make these with a metal M6 bushing. I like these, but I can't use them on the PB because they are too wide. :(
And this is the other jack they are looking at making for me: PJ301MXX.

oh... hadn't really thought about, i use mono/switching open back type.
i buy them in town here & i think they are switchcraft or a copy of????? they cost me $1.10 canadian, so the price isn't too bad, but those kobicon type u've linked to look crazy cheap!! sick! how's the quality??
oh yeah, so far i only panel mount, haven't really considered pcb mount. |

The Kobiconns are phenomenal quality for the price. These are the ones that have an extra coil spring that keeps pressure on the tip leaf spring. I use them on all my modules, as do several other manufacturers (actually, most of the boutique euro manufacturers that PCB mount their pots, as well as some others).
Do you have a link to the jacks that you use? _________________ ~flight

here's a link: http://198.166.44.233/mro/products.asp?PN=24-387-0
no pic & no price though. just imagine 1/4 switchcrafts (open back) that are often used in guitars, pedals & other things, but 3.5mm or 1/8".
no worries, i'm gonna look into those kobiconns as the price is way cheap through Mouser Canada.... i doubt MRO or anyone else locally can match that.
but.... how about 3.5mm or 1/8" plugs, i prefer to make my own cables. anyone have a recommendations on them??? i've used Blacets cables kit but i'm not super fond of his plugs. |

Sounds like those jacks are the Swiitchcraft 142A, or a clone thereof - especially since they're only CA$1.10! They are almost USD$5.00 through Mouser. The 142A is 0.141" - neither 3.5mm or 1/8".
Plugs: I have always liked these Kobiconn plugs, here's the datasheet.
But I'm now finding that the knurling isn't deep enough for a good grip, so I'm looking for something else. I prefer metal-bodied plugs because they have a really small diameter body and I hate plastic. _________________ ~flight

i've been using these for a long time too, both for my DIY stuff and for bubblesound modules. so far i've never had one fail. i used to use open switchcraft clones that were around $1 each and about 1 in 20 would end up DOA because i tightened the nut just a little too much and the shaft turned enough to break a contact.
the only downside to the kobiconns is the knurled nut, but you can find hex nuts for a few cents each... _________________ i've tried nothing and i'm all out of ideas... |

Mouser sells the driver to install the knurled nuts - 382-0006
Strangely enough, it is also the only one I have ever found, and I have been searching for years. Eagle plastics is another Mouser house brand, and they have it custom made. It requires a little modification to actually work (the blades that fit in the slots in the nut are too wide & have to be filed down), but it is the only one out there, seriously. I've even asked a number of jack manufacturers (that sell jacks with these nuts) and they don't know of any.
You can overtighten the knurled nuts and deform the bushing though, I've had it happen a couple times now, but that's out of over 4000 jacks so I'd call that an acceptable failure rate. _________________ ~flight

yeah that looks like them accept for the hex nut.... the ones i bought from MRO are knurled. also they're not 0.141" as they do fit my Blacet plugs so i'd say they're 1/8".
those Kobiconn plugs look decent too!! |

Interesting note on the Switchcraft 142A:
I just received an email from the local distributor. It appears that Switchcraft has been working on my request to adapt the 142A as a 3.5mm jack and I should have the first samples in early June.
I'll keep y'all posted!

I only need six, but I figured that since the Living VCO pcbs just shipped there might be others looking for the same. Just thought I'd throw it out there to probe as to whether there might be any interest/demand for a group buy on this stuff, and/or whether anyone knows a source that would offer a good enough price break to make a group buy worthwhile.
Left to my own devices, I'll probably just go for some Philmore dials at ~22/ea. _________________ blog|music |

the living VCO doesn't seem that bad?!? I mean, as far as VCO boards goes it's pretty average, innit?
but yes, I wouldn't start with the VCOs either. End with those |

to be honest, I built the CGS vco not too long ago, and I was scared shitless...
http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/pic/photo_cgs48_vco.jpg
- looks to be about the same density, and although it did take a while to stuff, it's the same process as the simpler stuff.
so yeah, it's all bark, no bite :-D |

Regarding vernier dials, this chap posted on e-m recently (about a month ago) with 10 turn vernier dials:
http://electro-music.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33602
They seem ideal for the Living VCO's and it may be worth dropping him a mail, I got the impression he had loads!
He's totally recommended too, when I opened my parcel I thought he'd sent me someone else's order by mistake, as it had lots of other parts (trimpots and polystyrene caps etc) I contacted him about it and he said they were freebies - pretty cool!

I built 3 of them fooking things and I am building up 10 more
it’s one of the hardest PCB I think I have had to build and thers 2 per module
the sound is Lush
the Living VCO PCB is easy its 3 of the same thing and the control I built 2 boards up in no time
it may not prove so easy to wire up the panel
the string filter panel is piss easy unless you do this
The Veneers off The Big Ear are small but well worth the money he is asking and perfect for the living VCO _________________ Cheers

it’s one of the hardest PCB I think I have had to build and thers 2 per module
the sound is Lush | gotta ask; for your own enjoyment (EEK!) or for clients? Out of curiosity, how much would a build like that cost? |
of the 3 that are built 2 are mine and one is in NYC with a client who paid far too little for it but the price was agreed before the build and I never go back on my word
The 10 that are being built will be for open sale when they are finished not before
The price will be decided when they are finished as I am logging my time on them all SM caps are done that’s 30 per board 2 boards per module 10 modules
Im taking a brake but will resume when time allows after I move house in the next few weeks
Let’s just say the price will be less resembling and more resembling _________________ Cheers

@wetterberg and @the bad producer - thanks for the leads on the Verniers. I'll probably grab some from that contact on e-m
Krisp- you're a brave soul! Those string filters sound sweet, though. Worth a little _________________ blog|music |

| I've been a rather large fan ( no laughter from those who have met me ) of the Neutrik NYS226 plugs. Allied seems to have the best price on them and keeps them in stock. All metal, easy to terminate RG174 into. They are, well, very solid feeling. |

sounds interesting.... i posted a question about 3.5mm or 1/8th inch plugs on the jacks group buy thread about just such a thing.
i'm looking for an alternative to those used buy Blacet & the REALLLY pricy swicthcraft ones i know about.
flight mentioned (i think) that kobiconn do some good ones also.
do you know the price on these Neutriks @ Allied???

58cents ea Q100. $71.18 delivered. They are very solid feeling vs some of the Kobiconn plugs I tried which felt "thin walled" for lack of better description. I got one Blacet kit years ago and it had the same plugs which, while I used them, I just don't care for.

Here's some tasty Neutriks for cheap:
$1.06 each. They are TRS, but will work fine & are excellent quality. Either ground the ring or leave it unconnected.
These are good too:

Yup. I like the ones like the Calrads above, they also have the spring strain relief. 171-PA3191-2-E
What I really like about these is the tip connection is a cylinder, not a flimsy tab that may contact the sleeve connection or the handle.
Dataheet
They're $1.01 each if you get 10 or more. _________________ ~flight

Hey flight, I just posted in the DIY thread regarding sourcing some mono sockets for my Klee. I then remebered I had your choices barebones still packed up to be built so I whipped one of the white sockets out and they are long enough to poke through the 3mm klee panel. Can I ask where you got them as I need some of those quickly.
Are they these by any chance ?

im looking for a good place to pick parts up from. i really need the 12v plugs that goes from the modular to the PSU.
does anyone know a site i can get these?
and if anyone has a good generic list of parts to order in bulk to put together eurorack kits that would really help out a lot. |

Close, but not quite. They should work OK, but the white ones are the 16PJ137, and are the cheapest as well. _________________ ~flight

I just received an email from the local distributor. It appears that Switchcraft has been working on my request to adapt the 142A as a 3.5mm jack and I should have the first samples in early June.
I'll keep y'all posted!

Oh crap, I never did follow up, huh?
They lied. They didn't even change the bushing, and the screwy switch they use doesn't work with 3.5mm plugs so they would require a massive tooling fee and minimum yearly order. _________________ ~flight

| flight wrote: | Sounds like those jacks are the Swiitchcraft 142A, or a clone thereof - especially since they're only CA$1.10!
I prefer metal-bodied plugs because they have a really small diameter body and I hate plastic. |
hey Flight!!! prolly at Namm right now??
anyways, did you ever look for & find something else in the plug department??
i'm finally gonna order these Kobiconn's you recommend & some of the Neutrik's to compare.... plugs that is. |

Nope, just stupi busy. I had to cancel my NAMM plans so I wouldn't fall behind schedule again.

I haven't had a chance to sample any other jacks yet, sigh. One of these lifetimes... _________________ ~flight
