I didn't realize she had a daughter. That girl has gone through some tumultuous times with the marital difficulties and substance abuse not to mention everything spread all over for public consumption. I'm always amazed at how resilient kids can be even in the most desperate times. I hope she is surrounded by truly caring people to boost her through young adulthood without much parental assistance. Kids seem to mature so quickly, and throwing all those family difficulties in the mix just stokes the fire.

It is what it is and aint what it aint.
It's a statement.

I like Whitney.

true.

She laid out lines.

true.

She laid it on the line.

true.

Crack is Whack.

true.

No joke.

She went on TV and said the same thing. Was she compensated for
her interview? I don't know. Does it matter?

I don't have positive or negative emotions about it. It's what happened.
She was talented, she earned money, she entertained people, she
did drugs, she died.

I'm not saying it's wrong or right. It's just what happened.

Veracity has nothing to do with whether or not it is a joke. The truth can be quite humorous, like how it's funny that you can't admit that you constructing a pun about a dead woman was an attempt at humor. "She laid out lines, eh, I mean she laid it on the line." It would be a good pun if a woman hadn't died in the process.

Why am I explaining myself to you. You seem set in your interpretation
and equally willing to accuse and defame. Are you going to tell ME what
MY intentions actually were in reality?

No.

The best you can do is tell me your interpretation.

I get it. I see how you read the conversation. OK. Own it yourself, don't
sell it to me. I'm stocked up. No solicitors.

And then, after that, you can apologize.

ditto.

My mind ties things together, random information, seemingly unrelated,
I'm VERY Right Brained... (both blessing and curse)

that's all it is. No attempt at humor or entertaining. It's just the threads
that tied together in the instant I wrote without censorship.

But no where did I make a first strike towards a member of the community.
I see how you treat the living. "dance on graves" "kkk"

dude. That IS insulting.

its doable if you are down enough and im speaking of experience. its not possible when everbody around you loves you for it. i saw the interview where she was shown a picture of herself being all bones on tv. shes like "thats a bad shot!" her manager probably "loved that dress" ... see what i mean. if you are the living death you need to feel it, thats the way out.

being an addict myself (8 years sober) it saddens me to see anyone die due to their addictions. addiction is a disease. some of us are born with the genes that make it easier to become one. very few can get out of it, and most die or end up in jail. being an addict doesnt make u a bad person, just a sick one. i think its 5x harder to stay sober when your in the spotlight and surrounded by people who are waiting for you to fail so they can make money off it. the press alone would be a total fucking nightmare and would drive most to use again. its also very sad that her daughter seems to be caught up in it as well, there are a bunch of pics of her doing blow and numerous reports shes battling her own addictions. maybe Whitneys death will be a wake up call to her daughter.

i wouldn't speak unless i had some idea what i was talking about as well...i lost people, some very close, and nobody was loving them for their problems...i'm not suggesting there isn't added pressure with a spotlight and yes-men, but they are only issues among many...i can think of several high profile musicians who were kicked out of bands for problems with addiction, and those who lost it all and continued to use...

In 1996 my best friend relapsed into a drug habit which eventually killed him-my other friend (a psych nurse) had said to me beforehand that the only thing that would force him to quit was the loss of physical or emotional support, and sure enough him being kicked out of the house by his long-suffering wife was the only thing that (temporarily) got him off heroin-his parents giving him money (against his wife's advice) was what killed him.

For someone in the position where there's lots of money around that's yours, and no-one around you has the authority to show you tough love, I don't see how the cycle could be easily broken. Brian Wilson is the other example I can think of whose wealth and talent worked against his recovery - his autobiography Wouldn't It be Nice is a pretty scary read.

totally, I hate all the Bodyguard bullshit, but that song is excellent. there were a lot of sides to her.

Singing backing vocals on Chaka Khan? working with Bill Laswell/Material in 1982 on a Robert Wyatt cover? It's a shame she took a bad path in later life though. I can't be doing with that Star Spangled Banner bullshit however wink

also I thought this was one of the most successful mash-ups in the early 00's before it all went rapidly Nathan Barley.

really brings out how bleak a song it is really. I especially love how it winds up the purists.

I wanna dance with numbers.... that really is the loneliest sound.

It's not right, but it's ok - as good as I remembered it. There's not enough Mbira in R&B!

And then there's the Robert Wyatt / Archie Shepp connection...I'd long forgotten about that.

Thanks for posting these. I had a long drive with only Heart FM for company today - don't want to be mean but let's just say they were focusing on the lesser Whitney classics....

May she rest in peace...

BUT... much like Winehouse, This was NOT "tragic". This was a foreseeable consequence of bad behavior. I really wish people would stop making these assholes into martyrs. What about her kids? and her family? As someone who's been around drug addicts my entire life, I've got very little sympathy for Whitney. What a waste.
