I dance to krautrock.....
I dunno, I tend to see it as general areas I happen to be focused on.
jam or compose
free patch or knob twiddle
pulse or space oriented
melody or timbre based
The balance can even change per song, but I always find one element takes dominance over another. I actually find that the element I'm not focusing on is the more important aspect. For example, if I'm working on something rhythmic or pulse based the space I leave becomes even more important and vice versa.
You really need a venn diagram. |

Did somebody hear someone say something? Nah, must have imagined it...
I think you were actually talking about the crap I dribble out...
Cheers

This is what we usually refer to as "false modesty." (Though I am sure it's not false.)
Folks, listen to this man's work.

I just patch things together and whatever happens is the result, its best not to think about it too much, or at all. _________________ nonlinearcircuits

What music? No-one told me I'm supposed to do music on my modular
After fooling around with synths, keys and computers for 25 years I still haven't learnt to Play, I'm just doing noises, ambiences, sequences and rhythms that please me. An on-going ego-trip I guess. |

The music I usually make is...
An escape from the monotony of the 9 to 5 but when I'm feeling a bit more philosophical I like to think of creating music as reaching self actualisation on Maslows Hierachy of Needs
"A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be. He must be true to his own nature. This need we may call self-actualization." _________________ http://soundcloud.com/koova |

b. Kind of krautrock. With eurorack, and I'm over 40. |
We are kindred spirits. I also dabble in higher-tempo Depeche, Pendulum & Soulwax type stuff. But it always has melody - I can't help myself. I'm 45 and only got into modular (Euro) in December last year! Before that I was using Arturia soft synths but just couldn't 'connect' with them, brilliant as they are. _________________ Dripfeed |

Excuse me... But haven't musicians generally been trying to AVOID being "categorized". Sheesh! _________________ Doug Slocum

It's true. And I was reluctant to post it because I knew there would inevitably be more aesthetic discussions and people saying they do not fit under any label or genre, but such discussions are probably impossible to avoid. I had hoped to make the types pretty open ended. I thought that the krautrock type would cover Berlin and Dusseldorf schools, which is a lot of ground. Not sure why I forgot to add some drone/dark ambient style, or so-called electronica/IDM. Yeah, it's all categorization and it will never be perfect. I guess trying to get a rough breakdown of what kind of music people here make with their modulars is pretty much a futile task. For example, I was curious how many people make techno with their Buchla or minimal synth pop with their Serge. The varieties of sound exploration that people here do is one of the best parts about this forum, from highly-planned compositions to ecstatic noodling. There is generally no privileging of one style over another and yet everyone gets along.
If pressed, I would guess that fart noises would tend toward the atonal. |

I just thought that if I added "step" and "core" to anything else it would sound legit. _________________ Polyphony
