OK, got up early today, had a nice 3 hours guitar practice . . . now it's time to patch up something new.

Always exciting and intimidating w/ a blank slate laid out. . . . where to start, maybe plug in a oscillator and just listen to sound, maybe modify - or start w/ a function patch an and add sonics later? How about an external sound source, yea that sounds cool - but which source? OK, I'll use a random Voice Memo from my iPhone . . .hmm found a cool radio sample here, already getting inspired smile

off to patch!!

cheers! Guinness ftw! Guinness ftw!

Hey django,
Sounds like you don't need much help in this department! smile
For me... I usually have a certain "sound aesthetic" in mind before I start. Of course, on my way to reaching the idea that I had in my head to start with I usually get side-tracked by some unexpected magic (or even mistake!) and I end up with something altogether different then what I set out for. In other cases I do actually end up nailing what I wanted in the first place. With the Buchla though, one never can tell what they're in for! It's peanut butter jelly time!

- John

P.S. Kudos for the guitar practice. Fellow fiddle player here and there's nothing quite like a good practice/work out on those strings! thumbs up

Yes. I love coming at things from different angles. I also love challenges. A friend of mine said one day "Can you make the ocean with that?" and I ended up with the buchla ocean video with seagulls.

Lately I've been way into space tunes and long drones. Not sure where I'm headed next.

I've been out in the garden all day and doing other chores. I can't wait to sit down in an hour and patch. I'm going to blend Jasuto with the Buchla!

See you on the other side...

Guinness ftw!

I find thinking about the science behind the sound is a huge inspiration to music making. Probably one of the reasons I'm attracted to music making.

My girlfriend and I have been watching a lot of Cosmos lately. After an episode I always feel like running off into my studio.

Head-space is more important than ideas.

you beat me to it - though sometimes i get so distracted by a particular problem that i solve it at the cost of something that actually sounds good...

Great ideas here folks - be they inspired by the mind . . . altered or otherwise Rasta-nana

I agree Badrobot, patch challenges offered up are always a good angle!

And yes Prototek, sometimes the patch ideas set out ahead actually become reality w00t . . . but it's the unexpected distractions along the way that yield well for me nanners

Finally had my first proper session with the Buchla last night:

this was me trying to get 1.2v/oct from kenton to properly track pitch via cv in (much attenuation, banana->cv adapting etc needed)

i was so scared of knocking the 259e freq scaling knob of it's position i did 10 consecutive takes with different layers to get this:

and then i decided to figure out the wavetable select/morphing etc and this happened:

[s]http://soundcloud.com/ylem-records/y014-buchle-my-shoe[/s]

nothing like learning new gear to produce weirdnesses...

[no, the drums aren't buchla - just some trashed samples to carry things along...]

These are both really great.
The second one's synth parts are amazing but the drums really let it down.
Hope that's not too harsh.

it's a fair comment by all means - i greatly desire some hardware drum synthesis options, but since currently i would have to create each sound separately from basic pinged filters, noise etc then sequence one layer at a time, i just dont have the patience - henc i tend to run up quick loops of samples and rarely put more effort in - the result is i never officially 'finish' many tracks because satisfactory drums dont happen.

mind you, that's true for many parts of my tracks. my hd is an elephants graveyard of unfinished weirdnesses :p

collaborating with others is my solution to such things!

I really enjoyed opening both SC files in different windows and playing them simultaneously. Great!

yay! thnxyou. i had new inspiration last night whilst experimenting with running the 259e through cwejman filters (i'll spare you the acid techno that resulted - it's a little repetitive for most tastes...)

curious idea - am glad there's ways i hadnt thought of to twist things even more!

the patch i made is now in the wiki as a more general form for any modular:

http://wiki.muffwiggler.com/wiki/Wofl%27s_complex_%27liquid%27_acid_pa tch

to do with buchla you just need to replace the vc mixer with the wavetable morphing function of a 259e:
