i should say my post was a bit tongue in cheek but what i am trying to say is just not to worrying about pleasing and about reactions and just do what you can and have no fear.
The best option for problem people i found is just to ignore them most of the time , dj's tend to take care of themselves but dont be afraid .
Problems only really occur when your booked to play your music and its not genre specific and instead quite ' unique ' but the enviroment your booked to play is very genre specific and full of genre fixated humans.
You dont quite fit in and most apes get very afraid when something 'different ' enters their cave and attack.
I personally often focus on creating a space with the sound and forget theres people there , theres always one person who will get what your doing and relate to it.
On the positive side if you enviroments well suited to your sound then you will get people vibing off it and a positive feedback and its great to hear your sounds through a pa.
Have fun.
If your suffering nerves on the night i suggest a beer , it really helps. |

Oh I figured it was dude haha but yeah its good advice, funnily enough I dont actually own monitor speakers so I always play through a PA here luckily I live in the country where there are only cows to annoy and its too far for the cops to drive for a noise complaint
but you are right, do my thing enjoy it and hopefully some people will dig on it, if not then at least I will have had fun, got to jam in the wild and at least show some people a modular. If any of the DJ's complain I will just hand them some patch cords and ask them if they would like to make a sound..... would probably shut them up "wheres the playback knob?" (phonogene man... geez who doesn't know what they are.. lol)
btw that video was awesome, it doesn't get too much more different a guy rocking a whole bunch of roland stuff and a freaking harmonica!! thats brave man he should totally get a banjo *insert banjo drop * he had a serious collection there too actually was that TWO tb303's? _________________ www.equinoxoz.com

Ok so the gig was last night and it went off! seriously I was astounded. I am sure that someone videoed it and will post it later online but I was right chuffed that everything went together well and there were no equipment stuff ups or problems.
One thing I will say is that a Z3000mk2 sub bass on a huge system is something otherworldly. All the sounds were so much better on a massive system.
thanks again for all your kind words and everything guys I just wanted to update this to let people know it went well _________________ www.equinoxoz.com

Yeah, but I think your inclination about just being down at the time was right (no offense). You don't have to live up to anyone's expectations, other than your own. Make the music that you want to hear. The minute you start catering to other people's expectations, you go from being an artist to being an entertainer.

See? Awesome. Nothing to worry about.
Agreed that hearing your songs on a big PA can be a (pleasant) surprise. |

The funniest thing was someone predicted that a few guys were like "can I remix you" was really hillarious to me really.
They wanted to get me back but the organiser said "if you could sample everything and play it back that way it would make it alot easier to fit you on the bill"
I sort of thought to myself yes there is the first compromise, then I would be doing exactly what I am working against! being a laptop only musician, not that theres anything wrong with that however you make music is fine by me but I wanted to do something a bit different to that and the whole point was to use this stuff in a live atmosphere.
The fact that the whole thing could go drastically wrong is what made it exciting to do and there was no walking away from my set to grab a beer (like 3 of the other guys did) I was genuinely surprised by the good reactions I got though and that made me really happy (and very humbled) was fun but I am very glad I was on first made it much easier than having someone else pump the crowd right up before I went on.
anyway overall everyone there was really cool and apart from copping a pretty heavy duty laser to the eye and having some chick come on stage and try and fiddle with the Euro stuff the set was without hitch. I would do it again if allowed _________________ www.equinoxoz.com

I don't think you should leave the placement of the boards for "I'll solve that when I get to that part...". It should be thought of before." |

Nice one on the gig
Mind you, i can see where the promoter is coming from re: gear... you probably take up a wad of room and time packing and unpacking. If you could simplify it down to some bits of hardware (mpc + a portable rack or something) it might help both of you.
Is one hour a long set to play live (i.e. modular live)?
I come from a (unsuccessful) DJ background and i'd hate to play an hour... i'd want 2 minimum to work to where i wanted to go. _________________

I think it means you have to frown when you play it. |

I only played only once 'live' and that was for 30 minutes. I had to stop when I just got warmed up, so I guess one hour would suit me better. Especially as I like to start with slower, more chilly stuff for warm-up and then slowly get it going. _________________ Soundcloud

Thanks steve
Look I totally get where they are coming from too, it was alot different to everyone else that basically just used a laptop and the provided DJ mixer. I am building something like a DJ coffin for the next one though (no not something that I plan to put people in) something that instead of a turntable either side I have a briefcase like modular, able to be closed patched etc of course, the mixer in the middle and APC4-/laptop above for silent way etc. Something I can quickly set up and pull down without drama.
An hour was about perfect for the amount of tracks I had actually. But I think the next one is a bit longer, once you get started patching away etc the time just flies by. _________________ www.equinoxoz.com
