I would like to extract gates from a random CV source. Is a comparator or slope detector better for this?

I'd go with a slope detector - great way of getting three separate gate outputs from a single random (or non-random) input.

As said I think the slope detector gives you 3 gates - a comparitor 2.

Not sure if it is the number that is important to you?

Matter of taste I think - depending on the source and whether you think one sounds better/is more useful for the specific application... good to have both in your system!

Cheers

if i had to choose only one - slope detector every time.

i tend to go for a slope detector when i want the gates to seem random and a comparator when i want the gates slightly more controlled.

as i'm sure you are aware a comparator will trigger depending on the magnitude of the random cv - i.e. above or below a certain threshold.

a slope detector responds to *what* the random cv is doing i.e. rising, falling or staying steady.

i find a logic module of some sort a good companion to both.

You can patch both with the Sport Modulator:

http://navsmodularlab.blogspot.com/2011/08/patch-tips-17-sport-detecto r.html

Maybe try it with the SSG?

A simple solution for motion-dependent triggers is the A-156 QNT i.e. each time it quantizes, it emits a trigger. Good with a joystick.

I'm currently using a 4MS RCD recoded with the Tracking Gate Sequencer Hex as a window comparator e.g. random signal in = 1 of 8 triggers firing depending on the incoming CV.

That said, if you're going to order from Elby, I'd join you smile

I don't have slope detectors, buth comparator with output of S&H to threshold CV is much fun! cool

I just came across this CV-to-Trigger/Gate module whilst looking for something else. Tom has been quietly releasing a lot of utility and MIDI/CV items as of late.

From the webpage:

Overview

CVT will convert a 0-5V CV signal into 8 different triggers.

For instance:

when 0V is received, TRIG1 will send a trigger pulse.

When 5V is received, TRIG8 will send a trigger pulse.

In between voltages will send trigger pulses at the respective sockets.

Pushing the button toggles modes, between trigger mode, described above, and Gate mode.

Gate Mode

In this mode instead of a short trigger pulse, the output will stay high (on/5v).

Note; Input range is approx 0-5V. Voltages outside this range may cause strange results!!!

Specification

Width 10HP

Power 5V, 30mA

CV Range 0-5V

Thanks for pointing that one out Kent. I need to check the ASol lineup. I think this would be great for triggering different events from a sequencer that is driving a melody. I can imagine some nice percussion riffs being dictated by the melody.

Navs - excellent lesson on the Sport Modulator.
