It's weird, my abilities are modest at the best of times, but the moment I switch on a camera or any other mode of recording my chops go from "mediocre" to "abysmal". I get very self conscious that way.
Which leads me to believe I should probably record more videos after three or four double whiskys. |
Whisky works; or you can record ALL the time (or both!) But seriously it all comes from playing more and challenging yourself; the best musicians learn to work through mistakes, to not expect perfection. |
I've sort of resigned myself to your good piece of advice: just hit "RECORD" immediately after turning on the synth and only hit "STOP" after it powers down. If I get into the act of playing after a couple of minutes the consciousness of the recording will diminish. And if I get five minutes of goodness in an hour of noodling it'll still be worthwhile. It reminds me of what a lot of fly-on-the-wall style of documentary filmmakers do. They don't actually begin "shooting" until the cameras have been in place for a few days and the subjects have begun to treat them as a sort of wallpaper.
One thing that highlights my lack of skill is when there's a prominent echo effect. I've never been big on reverb, but I love medium to long delay times with lots of regen. Those are completely unforgiving when it comes to mistakes in timing; you hear the clash almost immediately and if you don't compensate right away it turns into a big, accidentally polyrhythmic mess very quickly. |

I've been farting around with the DDVCO this afternoon and am uploading a video as I write. It's much less a demo about the DDVCO and more a big patch with the module embedded in the mix.
Your plying is not bad at all. Don't be so self conscious. The tonality reminded me of a John Lord organ riff. |
