If you are going for Sunn's kind of saturated/distorted sound, there is no one "holy grail" pedal. This sound timbre is created on layers and layers of differently saturated signal (pedals, tube amp preamp, tube amp power tubes, mic preamps, tape, compression...), feedbacks as well as tracking of "air" because room resonance also is very important.
Everything works that creates additional overtones. Also do not forget a nice analog bass synth layer to support low freqs of distorted guitar.

It is very huge setup that is used to create THAT timbre.

I know... problem, as you can imagine, are: space, money etc... I just want to go in "that direction" with something I can afford and carry with me live Mr. Green

I could recommend to start with second hand things: pair analog distortion pedals (f.e. two RATs or combination of one RAT and one Big Muff), "not so expensive tube amp" and 1x12 cab. Pair of Shure SM57 (for mids) and Beta52 (for bass) mics will be useful for tracking as well as live shows. Even if you track just one speaker playing around with two different mics will be fun.

Stay away from pedals called "Zvex"and "Klon". They are insanely overpriced.

Is the Adrenaline decent on synths? I've always been curious about that and only ever seem to pull up demos on guitars.

The Sherman definitely excels at distortion it can get real nasty, it doesn't do clean though.....

It is pretty cool. I ran the Little Phatty through it and got some great stuff. It gives it that "synth through a speaker sim" sound along with all of the other cool stuff that the unit provides like distortion, reverb, delay, and great filter effects. Combined with some osc FM knob and filter manipulations = very nice. Also sits in the mix well due to it's distinctive tone color as compared to rich VI's or the awesome warmth of a modular.

I'm sure your speaking of the Sherman Filterbank.

This isn't true of the Sherman/Rodec Restyler.
It can be clean, and its soft clipping can get pretty thick,
But it never really gets 'nasty'.

I've got tons of gtr pedals, mostly hooked on Big Muffs with late 90's black sovtek sounding best to my ears.

I've been using the mooger fooger ring mod (or lowpass) drive on a ton of patches lately. bypassed the effect, just using the drive circuit which is still active when the effect is bypassed, or setting the mix to 0

For synths I mostly use the EH Graphic Fuzz or ART Tube Pre. The DOD Grunge does work amazingly well too.

The EH Graphic Fuzz works well between modules.
