just played the amnesia demo... they won't be getting my money. I really wanted to be scared, but it just didn't happen.

played both penumbra games (own amnesia, but haven't played it yet). they were...well, yes, interesting.

fairly atmospheric games, though graphically they're not amazing which detracts from the feel of it. good sound design.

stealth is everything - combat exists in the first game ("overture"), but it's not common, you're often better off avoiding it, and the best weapon you get is an axe. from memory the second game ("black plague") doesn't even feature weapons, so you have to use stealth. bunch of puzzles to solve (including some physics ones) - got stuck for a while a few times, but there's nothing there that will really confound you.

they can be a bit clunky to play - the whole using the mouse like your hand for interacting with objects doesn't always work well, particularly with the combat bits in the first game.

i enjoyed them - they're certainly a bit different. considering that amnesia is supposedly the penumbra games done better, might be worth skipping the originals and just going straight to amnesia.

Thanks for the input guys. On the graphics part, I suppose it is understandable that they are not stellar. From Wikipedia, it looks like the demo came out in 2006, game in 2007, and both expansions in 2008. Which is really scary to think that's over four years ago eek! where did the time go?!?

Amnesia being fairly newer (2010) will probably be better off. Perhaps I should check out the demos. One of my favorite games is the original Silent Hill so I do like my scary puzzle games and I don't mind the avoidance aspect. In fact, it's funny you mention that. The only reason why I can play F.E.A.R. at night is because I have fully automatic weapons. Silent Hill... no.

Thanks!
Brian

Canis Canem Edit (PS2)

Got reminded of it recently, and thought I'd best give it a good crack.

Need to whittle down that backlog whilst having a break from Dark Souls and waiting for The Witcher II (Should finish the first one, think I'll get II on XBox) Dragons' Dogma and XCom.

Ok so finished the main quest in Skyrim - going to continue but need a break for a bit.

Also just finished AC Revelations main storyline. So what is next?
I have Dead Island, Oblivion, Mass Effect 1 & 2 on the shelf.

Im thinking of Dead Island as the other 3 are quite an investment in time I'd imagine....

[Edit - I dont have a million games, just in case I gave that impression - these are birthday presents since last September and Christmas presents! I dont have a million hours either - I should be writing a research proposal for uni! hihi ]

Mass Effect 3 keeps crashing my PS3. I'm trying to go to a certain area of the Citadel to finish some random little jerkoff sidequest, and it locks up almost every time. I'm pretty early in the game. I guess I'll just continue the quest anyway, but it makes me worry it might become unprogressable later.

From Gamefly I have

Rhythm Heaven Fever! The calibration stage is absolutely awful and almost made me want to just send it back, but once I got past it (it is a one-time thing) the game was just as fun and goofy as its DS counterpart (haven't made it to 2-player yet).

I also have Tales of Graces f. I've never played a Tales game, and though this one is getting good reviews I don't think I'll get around to it before Xenoblade Chronicles comes out, and there's only so much JRPG I can take at a time. Plus I'm going to the beach next week cool

Radiant Historia is a good one on DS, just got reissued and has a fun SRPG-ish battle system and cool alternate-timeline story.

dead island. ok, it's the only one i've played out of those, but still....dead island. i sunk about 33 hours into it - that was with a fair bit of exploring and doing almost every single mission in it, so it's certainly complete-able in less than that. and i thought it was fun.

now playing - skyrim. bit late on picking it up - only started playing last week. my stupid FPS brain found it a bit overwhelming at first, but starting to get a handle on it.

33 hours is nothing.

I think I just passed 200 in Skyrim. And I'm not even done.

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer as well. My crew is finally at a point where we can regularly complete silver runs. I feel so accomplished!
