I mean I remember LFO on the front of NME or MM, claiming that rock was dead, which it probably was at the time, and that was like 1992 or something TWENTY YEARS AGO. And LFO weren't all that as I remember. |
I remember a street-rag saying the same thing here in Sydney in 1986 claiming that Talking Heads and Billy Bragg would mop up what was left of rock while bright young middle class kids would all go into performance art/cabaret. Rock and Roll has died many deaths over the years, at least in the minds of fad-hungry music journalists...
As long as there's stuff like this around I think it is on safe ground!

| Portland OR and folk music ruined rock for me. Too fucking cute. Rock should be about total destroy. Apologies Qwaidan, but to me those kid videos are an example of what's wrong with rock - if it's kid or advertising friendly, something went wrong. Rock should be such that it is hidden from children, oppressed by the authorities and generally feared by the masses. Rock n roll should be a scourge upon the earth. Otherwise, where's the fun? I blame the inexplicable absence of Satan in today's music. The downside of secularism I guess. |

| Generally most bands are not good or boring, and most bands happen to also play some form of rock music. |

It's be been done to death.
I for one welcome our new bleep bloop eeping musical overlords.
Not saying there isn't any new good guitar driven music, I've seen some local bands that still do some original music, but for me they're few and far between.
Rock is the the new jazz. For the most part it's the old war horses trotting their 20 year old hits. _________________ What were we talking about? I forgot...

Not going to touch "rock" because I'm not even sure if I know what that means anymore. I'll always have a place in my heart for psych, punk, funk, and a bunch of other shit.
Some days I feel certain that I've gotten over contemporary guitar music, but then I keep listening to Persona La Ave. |

"rock" music i like that is recentish
the dead weather
the mars volta (deloused in the comatorium is one of the best records of the last 10 years in any genre imo - though after that they are hit and miss imo)
radiohead (still find them worth paying attention to)
my brother gave me some music.. a bunch of stoner sludge rock and basic heavy things... pelican, high on fire etc.. i can't recall al the different bands on there.. it's kind of a compilation of his favs.
i think it's easy to get jaded about music as time passes. i know i feel that way sometimes.. just get tired of hearing stuff that sounds like a bunch of people going through the motions or like they just discovered something and are really excited about it when it's like 10 years old and done to death already... sort of like those people in brooklyn really excited about the arps in roland poly analogs and delay pedals. i guess it's all new to someone. _________________ LABEL TWITTER FACEBOOOK SAMPLE LIBRARY

This,
I've rented studio spaces with lots of bands in it and not only did they all suck. They were the most boring wannabe posers ever. They pretty much were in a band because they somehow deeply believed that it would make them cool. I really hate that band mentality of a drummer plays drums, a guitarist plays guitar, ect. What ever happened to being a musician. People that only play one instrument in a band, only understand how that one instrument works, and with out the band couldn't write a song if they're life depended on it, are pieces of shit.
I remember everyone at that studio space talking shit about us. And we had this reputation of "don't go near them, they're bad people" why? Because we did hard drugs! Um, I thought this this this was rock and roll. Whatever happen to people OD'ing on stage and shit. That was rock and roll. If you're deeply offended because I was nice enough to put down the H I was smoking and offer you a bump of K from my knife, put down your fucking guitar and go back to your shitty apartment mommy and daddy pay for.
That being said I don't listen to any music anymore. I hate it all. I know there's a lot of good stuff out there, but I don't have the time to dig through piles of shit for a gold coin. Books on cd are MUCH better. Just finish the unabridged biography of Steve Jobs. Great book. Much better than rock.
Sorry rant over. |

Agreed. I never understood how wearing leather tights, using copious amounts of makeup, and styling one's hair to the point of making any woman jealous, was the epitome of masculinity of that time period; a culture championed by homophobes too.
To make a generalization, this same irrationality can be applied to the modern 'scene kid' and related musics, or whatever ashes are left of that movement.
I have no ill feelings towards these music cultures. It's just oxymoronic.
Anyway, tonight I will make a point to spin Lightning Bolt's Peel session as I refuse to believe 'Rock is dead.' Bullshit. |

I mean, it was and still is, pretty subversive for a man to be feminine and I think the way the hair metal bands acted i.e. clownish and so hyper masculine that not even wearing a woman's clothing could make them less virile probably made people a lot more comfortable. Plus, whatever form dandyism has taken, people have always acted like that to get some sex action. |
