It's very likely I will be attending a conference in San Diego in August. The conference place is the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel, but I'm not sure I can afford to stay there.
Does anyone know any decent hotels/motels nearby the Hilton Bayfront (at walking distance) at $100 or less per night?
Also, what should I not miss, synth-wise or otherwise? I may be staying 4 or 5 nights.
Thanks for any contributions. _________________ My music website | My modular blog |

Yes there's a few of us here!
That hotel is right next to the convention center & the Gaslamp District. I can't think of anything too decent & cheap in easy walking distance (I'm sure there are, but I don't really pay attention to the hotels down there), but it is right off the trolley tracks, so you could potentially get something in Old Town or even Mission Valley.
You should definitely check out Balboa Park. (Museums, zoo, great architecture, outdoors, etc.)
And if you like good beer then there's many other places not to be missed as well! |

There are a few of us. I've met or communicated with Muff's users urbanscallywag, Pulp Logic, and diophantine--all fine fellows. There are a few more of us around.
Less than $100/night will be hard to do in that part of downtown during the summer. The Horton Grand Hotel is kind of a cool old place and might be what you consider walking distance:

It's stumbling distance from a lot of the Gaslamp District night spots if that's your thing. _________________ Variable Resistor at The Eurorack Database: http://eurorackdb.com

Yup I'm here as well. Maybe we should use this time in August to do a little meetup or something. That might give us all enough time to plan something and make it happen. Now that I think of it, I can even provide a space where we could actually bring gear and make noise if everybody is down.
As far as hotels, I'm no good for advice in that department, sorry.
Things to do: There's the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad (A little north from downtown) It's a small museum but there's a lot of really cool instruments and history contained within. There's even an impressive synth/electronic instruments section. |

Not walking distance but across Harbor Dr.(The road that runs the length of Lindbergh Field) in Pt. Loma there's a chill hotel called The Pearl which might be under $100/night.
It's been revamped with a nice bar/pool and they have a great movie night/dinner combination thing happening.

Seems far from downtown but it's actually just a 5min cab ride - I've walked and skated it(along the harbor) too many times to count. From Pt. Loma you've got a great view of downtown+it puts you close to Liberty Station which can be quite fun depending on what's going on..
If you go up to Carlsbad for the Museum(Which had a MOOG exhibit recently) - best to get a reservation for a tour at GIA(Gemological Institute) for the same day.
That way you can get tipsy at Karl Strauss, walk to the museum and then on to the GIA which usually has some pretty impressive exhibits such as Bill Atkinson's "Within the Stone".
Just below all of this is the Carlsbad Mall/Flower Fields/Ocean, etc..
Hope this helps, you can call or write when in town if you need ideas or anything.
Enjoy your visit! |

The Pearl is awesome, my cousin got married there.
Looks like we're going to end up with a SD wiggler list from this post. _________________ Variable Resistor at The Eurorack Database: http://eurorackdb.com

Thanks for all recommendations! In a few days I will know for sure if I'm going (fingers crossed).
If there's a synth meet between Aug. 29th and 31th, I'll do whatever it takes to assist and will bring some of my CDs to give away. _________________ My music website | My modular blog |

I lived in San Diego from 1996-2008. I still rent out my condo by UCSD in La Jolla (off Gilman Drive). I used to go back all the time to visit and do some work but it hasn't happened in a while or since I have been active at Muff's.
I'd definitely love to hang out though if I do come back. I need to stuff my self with food from El Cuervo on Washington St. at least once every few years! _________________ Brian

hey moogasm!
It'd be cool to also find out where everyone is spread out within greater SD area.
I live in Encinitas and work in Carlsbad. |

I already booked a room in the Horton Grand (thanks John Noble), which is about 1 km from the Hilton. Schedule is uncertain, yet, but I'll try to go to that Museum of Making Music. _________________ My music website | My modular blog |

Sounds great, fac! If a meetup works, that would be great.
I live on the west end of Mira Mesa, and work near UTC. |

I'm still up for a meetup!
Let's all decide on a day and I can book a room here at NAMM (also home of the Museum of Making Music) in Carlsbad. It's also right next store to Karl Straus Brewery and Restaurant which is a plus.
We should have access to tables set up some gear as well as some PA/Mixer equipment if needed.
What does everyone think? We should extend the invite to any Orange County or L.A. Wigglers that might want to make the drive as well. |

| If I knew that San Diego would become the home of great synth folks AND great craft beer I never would have left my loft on 13th Street. |

We could all move in to my condo just off Gilman by UCSD.
Market has not been kind so I've just been renting it for four years. _________________ Brian
