Work on music mostly. Sometimes I'll play around with my synths an create patches. But it's only 9:19 pm here. Then again it isn't that I can't sleep, I just tend to stay up late.

I read a study somewhere credible (sorry about the lack of specifics) that said there was a frequency of light put out by monitors that caused the brain to fail to release melatonin properly when viewed thirty minutes or so before one tries to go to sleep. Your monitor essentially tricks your brain into thinking it's daytime. Therefore, watching your monitor while wanting to go to sleep may be part of the problem. Google for more info.

Insomnia can be a burden. I used to suffer from it quite a bit when I was younger.

I used to have that problem when I was in my late teens and early 20s and I solved it with excessive drinking and smoking weed everyday. not really a good solution but it works. sometimes it pops up and I take it as a nice oppurtunity to play with the modular . but I work early so yeah. its a tough spot. I drink lavender "sleepytime" tea sometimes and that helps. Also Shin Chan (the american hulu version) is a fav. of mine when I'm going to sleep
good luck and sympathies

I'm naturally a night owl, but my work schedule is erratic and usually requires me to get up by 5 or 6 in the morning. I have constant, chronic insomnia. I've only had a full nights sleep two or three times in the past six years. Now my eyesight is going, my hearing is deteriorating, and I can only imagine what its doing to the rest of me. seriously, i just don't get it I've discussed it with my doctor, but his only solution is sleeping pills, which affect me intensely and would prevent me from getting up in the morning.

Just a note: Its actually normal to wake up after four hours. Used to be the way until electric light came along. People would sleep four hours, wake up, do some light work, visit neighbours, eat, and then sleep 1 to 2 hours later again for four hours. So if you are suffering from that, its just your body returning to the natural way sleep works. No reason to get stressed out. Source: Radiolab or American Life, I can't remember which podcast it was.

I read, have a small snack and above all don't think about any problems lying in the future.

Against bright blue light from the screen the nice plugin FLUX helps. Its free and works well.

actually sleep cycles last approx 90 minutes, and normally people go through at least four cycles per night.

an interesting read:

i drink more alcohol, smoke more weed, take more melatonin, or drop a benzodiazepene. if it still doesn't work then i'll start performing the lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram, or the middle pillar ritual, in the astral, and that usually sends me to sleep.

Use your modular to make some sleep tones, isochronic, monaural or binaural or a mix, maybe add in some low level filtered noise, 4-7hz beat frequencies, duration 15-30 minutes, very gradual changes, droning or very slight timbral or amplitude modulations work best.
You might need to experiment a few times with different waveforms and frequencies as there is not a formula that works for everyone, but generally sine and triangle waves work best, audio frequencies around 85-260hz (similar range to speech)
Listen at a moderate level, and see how you go, I'm not too sure if this works for everyone, but it puts me out and I sleep well after, here is one of mine you are welcome to try:

better than counting sheep: SUDOKU, upper difficulty.
this will do it in 15 minutes or less as long as one is laying down.

i have always been slow to go to sleep unless physically exhaustd. i used to lay awake for 1-2 hours many nights when young.

i can smoke pot quasi-legally so i do. but when i don't have pot - SUDOKU works like a motherfucker!

i f suffer from insomania from my 18 and it never went away i'm 36 now
its horible sometimes, i'm a night creature a lot (not always good)
i take melatonine and a insleeper (no real sleeping pill) but if i don't take it i just can't sleep, very horrible when i forget it or you have to have it always with you if you stay a night over at someone.
i mostly listen to 1 record (sometimes 2) while laying in bed, so my mind gets distracted of being a thinking bomb)

hope to work more on trying to do meditation or getting quiet rest moments in the day, trying to get more quality time in my day, than feeling always stressed up or unable to concentrate on stuff, hope it works out and finding a middle way by having some discipline and not to force it and not being too afraid to take it in hands

One technique I use when trying to fall asleep is intense visualization. I have two scenarios that I focus on. The first is I just lay in bed and visualize with all of my ability a planet of my choice rotating in the vacuum of space. Having read enough books and watched enough videos, I can pretty easily visualize a planet so I just sit there in space and watch and listen to the vacuum.

The other thing I think about, and this is pretty lame, is pitching in baseball. Having played the sport and watched my fare share, it's not hard for me to visualize. So I slow everything down and visualize pitching to different hitters. I visualize the crowd, the grass, the catcher, the count, how to hold the ball, etc. etc. I just focus and don't allow my mind to drift. Usually at some point I slow down my mind enough and this turns into a dream/sleep.

It's pretty crazy but it works for me .

If I need to sleep, I can't get up or I'll just get distracted and stay up. If I listen to music or a book I'll just hyper-focus on the audio.

But, as per usual, I support everything babaluma has said hihi
