No, not Emerson Lake and Palmer, I'm talking about El-Producto! One of the only hip hop producers to keep a heavy roots-based boom bap style while also getting really wild with synths. His latest album Cancer For Cure is about the heaviest hip hop you'll hear this year, and he also produced Killer Mike's latest, Rap Music, from front to back, which is very reminiscent of the ca. 1990 Public Enemy and Ice Cube albums. If there's an heir to the Bomb Squad, it is El-P.

And here's an interview where he talks about gear a bit:

I've been a fan of El-P since I saw the video for Step-Father factory on Much Music in like 2003. Fantastic Damage and The Cold Vein were huge influences.

I really liked that interview, it sounds like he's still enthusiastic about making music and being a "production nerd". I can identify with a lot of what he says about working with technology and coming up with your own voice. Thanks for the link. thumbs up

Fantastic damage and cold vein are fuckn classic. El-P's take on music is seriously refreshing for the genre.

hadn't heard the new album yet, that track is great. he's the real deal, his production and flow is impeccable and he's clearly in this for the long run we're not worthy

after a few listens, the music is a bit 'normal'

It's a shame he doesn't go quite as out there as he used to.

aside from making consistently fantastic music, he's also one of the funniest/angriest people to follow on twitter.

i dont think ive ever got the full payoff from El-p's productions within "the first few listens" - lots of ethereal subtlety in amongst the obvious courseness and dense layers that dont give up their game right away... it takes a bit to sink in.

You don't hear the distorted Reese bass sound (Don't Die) in Hip Hop too often. By the intro, I'd think that I was listening to a drum & bass track.

the new album is excellent, still, I prefer Mr. Lif's voice on top of his music.

He still uses that EPS-16, which is weirdly and satisfyingly mid-fi; it doesn't feel like old SP-1200/MPC-60 stuff, but it also doesn't feel 16-bit era. It's always somewhere in the middle and that makes his stuff gritty without sounding specifically "old sampler."

Here's one of my favorite tracks of his, mostly because it's hot and it's overlooked because it was only on a comp:

No lie, I bump el-p to deth. It's almost embarrassing my love for his work. Shit just makes me feel so raw, dusty, and digital.

To me, although Fantastic Damage was great and dense, the really out there stuff tends to overwhelm his already-not-that-distinct voice. Even though the lyrics were dense and great, I found myself listening to the instrumental version of the album way more often. I like the production on the new album because I can focus on his jugular-slashing lyrics, and it knocks too. Still have FanDam Plus for when I just want pure apocalypse.

I'd like to hear El-P do a whole album remix of Yo! Bum-Rush the Show!

interesting u think his voice isnt that distinct - id swear i could pic it out in an unmarked track (even if hes was spitting nursery rhymes).

tho his voice/lyrics and his porduction are kinda two difrent ball parks...

still find myself coming back to Linda Tripp when i want to hear a dose of venom, its alot more satisfying for that kind of vibe than browsing the "its time to diss ELP" thread anyway hihi

Well I do think it's distinctive, he just isn't the best at enunciation.

Linda Tripp, is that the track where he disses the Anticon guy with the recorded phone message? haha "i lllooovvveeee ccccommmmppppannnnyyyy fffflooooooowwwww" that made me lol back in the day.
