just thinking - to make the modular-view of the reason-rack one have to continuously stay in 'rear' mode with cables?
Am I right that buying the official ver.6 software (or update) doesn't guarantee you will be allowed to get access to SDK? |

They announced this at Music Messe if I remember correctly. There is another thread here on Muffs about it. The thing I am hoping will be made is a Silent Way or Volta type module made by somebody els that would allow patching into and out of reason from my modular. I know it can be done by exploiting a feature in Thor, but a dedicated module that is multi channeled and just appears as the current Hardware Interface module would be fine enough for me. I don't need all the module choices of a modular in Reason - it would soon become Reactor - I just want access to the "voice" modules and the sequencers and arpeggiators. _________________ -James

Seems like theyre reinventing the wheel. How about making life simpler and just making it a VST host?
....maybe Im missing something. _________________ For Sale - All proceeds go to muff wiggler for the site and/or to help with hospital bills (You will paypal him directly, not me)

The idea is that VST instruments would not be able to connect to the interface and would not have the same UI experience as the ones written for Reason. In the scheme that have you get a SDK from reason and your "module" goes through a vetting process that makes sure it connect to all the other Reason family in the same way as all the other Reason modules and reacts with them the same way. VST interments all have different interfaces and control schemes now and they are meant to be totally different instruments. It is a lot different than when you slot a module into a reason rack. VSTi's would break the rack look and feel completely. _________________ -James

Now that I read that the interfaces are to mimic Reason instruments, it makes more sense to me. I often miss having a standardized layout for these things now that I'm using a low-res touch monitor. Still, Reason was one of the worst offenders when it came to screen real estate, last I used it. _________________ (ignatius) "it's like Point Break meets Schindler's List"

You have to sign up for their 3rd-party developer program. I signed up for it I think a month ago and I got an email just a couple days ago asking me to fill out an NDA. The SDK is supposedly available to 3rd-party devs soon but I haven't seen any concrete dates. |

To be cynical, you could well say that they are (re-inventing the wheel that is)
However Rack Extensions will be first class citizens in the Rack. You will have full undo support from within the host (not dependent on the plugin).
Also, and this will depend on the developer, but they can place loads of various Audio I/O as well as CV I/O on the back of the RE to have it integrate with other devices in the rack, the same way that's always been possible within Reason.
One of the stock devices, The Echo, for instance, has breakout jacks for the feedback loop so you can actually process that with another effect before sending it back into The Echo.
This is all very simply put but imho there's some cool stuff that can be patched. You can i.e. use the CV output of a synth's LFO and let it control the CV input of The Echo's delay time. Just for an example. It's in the rear panels where Reason get's quite deep.
I think the success of RE's will depend on what the 3rd parties develop for it. Personally I really hope that dev's will cater to Reason modular rack paradigm. I guess only time will tell. _________________ Sound Designer |
