cl deals to be had for sure. just missed out on a free dx7, but picked up a near perfect condition sy77 for $50. great bang for the buck; this thing is a beast. delving into the 268 page owner's manual...

Wow! Good score! Would have been difficult to pass up if I'd seen that one. thumbs up

Plus you can play Pong on the Kurzweils! I Forget how to load it, but You play with the jog wheel and if I remember it even had the blip sound effects.

Very tempted. The only thing holding me back is, well, I already have a Euro modular, Clavia Micro and G1, and then there's Reaktor, PD et cetera. Still, there's something so elegant about all that Kurzweil power behind its shiny black monolith.

Also, need to wait for one to pop up loacally, as I don't like the idea of shipping one of those (I'm keen on the rack, don't need keys) internationally.

i wonder when yamaha vl1 will be available 2nd hand for cheap. that's another gem from the 90s (together with vp1, which was never mass produced)

what i'm scared of with these old digital things is servicability, because of the chips (some of them proprietary) which you can't buy easily.

the yamaha FS1r is for me the only NEW synth created in the last 20 years, with a new idea of synthesis

nah, there is much more, it's just not so easy to find

Hartmann Neuron with its neural network synthesis

or Yamaha VL1 mentioned above, korg wavedrum and Z1 and all the other physical modelling synths - different physical models (methods of synthesis) for strings, pipes, membranes, bars (=modal synthesis)

(or jomox neuronium was also NEW thing, just isn't a synth really)

but sure, fs1r seems interesting too. are there any articles explaining how does it work? am unable to google what do they mean by formant synthesis.
simple formant filters are very old concept. were used even in trautonium which is a very old synth. are the formants in fs1r perhaps somehow dynamic?

these are all great, but the difference is that so many rely on an external editor, and/or storage. As great as they are, a lot of why they are no longer loved is that they can be a hassle to maintain and keep up with. The analog synths were, for the most part, straight forward and did not require anything additional to enjoy.
Which might be fine if you have a couple, but could be a nightmare if one were try to collect them like analog synths. Some scsi drives work with some...some floppies .... so many specific editing programs need OS9.
It's a pain, not saying it's not worth it, but I think that's why the will not jump in value as the analog synths did. It's a primary reason we favored analogs, immediacy. Some of course will go up, but it won't be an across the board thing like what happened with analog. The lesser ones will prove too much of a hassle.

Just make sure you get a 12 voice one. 4 voice VA... Not so great.

I just sold a Nord2 rack. Great VA! I had an original Nord Lead 12 voice keyboard when they first came out. Loved the wood pitch stick and stone mod wheel. The pitch stick was like no other! Missed that on the rack I moved up to.

But, I have to say, nothing beats the original Virus A for analog emulation (IMHO). Still have mine!
