Ok...I'm a few episodes into Tom Baker and I have some questions.
-What is the motivation to travel in time? Does Dr. Who have a list of places in time he needs to go to? Is it like an exploration thing like Star Trek?
-What is the crazy pencil thing he has?
-Do all the shows connect to each other like the first few episodes?
-Who are the people (Reporter and other doctor guy) following him?
-In the first episode "Robot", why does everyone know who he is? Why does the brigadere know him so well?
I definitely see a good show here, but there are so many "WTF is going on" moments. |

Motivation? He stole the TARDIS from his home world (Gallifrey) and went rogue through time and space to explore.
Pencil thing is his sonic screwdriver. Unlocks doors and the like.
Most episodes are part of a serial between two and six parts in length, though there is often a full season story arc wherein an overall plot surrounds self-contained stories.
Sarah Jane Smith is a journalist who finagled her way into UNIT in the Pertwee era. She's awesome. The other fellow is a UNIT medical doctor and was onhand when the Doctor regenerated from the Pertwee incarnation into the Baker incarnation.
Many people in Robot do indeed know him and the Brigadier has been privy to two previous incarnations. Sarah Jane to the one immediately preceding that episode. See, Time Lords (the Doctor's people) can regenerate twelve times when their bodies are damaged to the point of mortality (though not from everything). The Tom Baker incarnation is the fourth body for the Doctor. The Brig met him back when he was on his second and was their for virtually all of his third. Robot begins with his regeneration after the harrowing events of The Planet of Spiders, which marked the end of the Pertwee era.
WTF moments are rife. But as the Doctor says so very often "never mind about that now", just go with the flow and enjoy that huge personality of Tom Baker's. Good stuff. If you ask me, anyway. |

Great reply! Thanks.
I have to say it's really growing on me. I've finished 3 series so far. Robot, Arc In Space and The Sontaran Experiment. Just stated Daleks! |

I wish they'd release Terror of the Zygons on DVD already... I want to complete that Robot to Zygons continuous story line. It's gotta be my favorite season (even though it bleeds a little into Baker's second season. Plus... Genesis of the Daleks! _________________ Perhaps all pleasure is only relief. |

does anyone else think the way david tennant runs is really funny? It's particularly pronounced in "the end of time" (watched it the other night).
it's amazing how re-watching dr who episodes really changes the way you feel about the actors and the story. second time through all the new ones and catherine tate was just amazing as a companion though I thought she was annoying the first time through.
I also need a starting place for everything previous, so thanks for the info! I had started with "an unearthly child" and "the daleks" but petered out from there. should definitely restart though. _________________ "You can't rule the world by going at it all scattershot." - Pearl Forrester, "The Final Sacrifice"

I've been a bigger fan of Baker, Pertwee and McCoy for some time, and never really got into the Hartnell stuff... Until recently. I rewatched The Aztecs recently, and that is a really cool historical piece. It feels like watching theatre. Plus, John Ringham plays a pretty decent evil high priest of sacrifice. _________________ Perhaps all pleasure is only relief. |

i should preface this with the fact that i watched the show when i was a kid mostly (1980s), and haven't seen any of the episodes since that first viewing. i was a huge fan though, used to read the official dr who magazine as well.
jon pertwee was my favourite. i don't know if it was just because he was the first i really remember watching or what...part of if was that he seemed like an authority figure.
never really clicked with tom baker - i just didn't like his personality after pertwee, felt a bit too frivolous. i liked peter davison better in fact. colin baker felt bland, and by the time sylvestor mccoy stepped in i felt i had "out-grown" the series (ah youthful arrogance, even at age 12).
i really would like to go back to the first doctor and work my way through all the incarnations up to the present day...but seeing as i have so many other tv shows waiting to be watched first, don't see that happening any time soon. _________________ _soundcloud |

how many of the original doctor who series/episodes are currently available?
i'd also love to start at the beginning and watch them all. i stared with tom baker as a lad, and only fell in love with jon pertwee later. i went to see him and (i think) elizabeth sladen in a doctor play at wimbledon, shortly before he died, must have been around the late 80's.
i have the "pescatons" vinyl. i really need to digitise that one!
i grew up with baker, davison, baker and mccoy, and loved them all in their own way. i (as a 14 year old) never, ever, forgave the BBC for axing it, and never will. maybe that's why i don't like the new ones? _________________ Hermetech Mastering | Discogs | SoundCloud | Bandcamp | Facebook | Pathmusick |

127 Complete serials
12 Incomplete serials
1 Reconstructed (The Invasion was done really well)
I'm just got my collection over 120 DVDs, so I'm almost current. The rest should finish out some time next year.
I usually just refer to Wikipedia

I will go with the first Doctor I watched religiously as a kid and the only Doctor actor I met in person: Jon Pertwee. I went to quite a few Who conventions in my college days. One of my brothers had pretty much every episode up through the Colin Baker episodes on tape. WXXI in Rochester, NY played one entire serial through every Saturday night and he taped them all. AFAIK some of the original BBC color tapes of the Pertwee episodes were lost and are preserved in black and white only. As an old Who fan I find the newer series lacking in the charm - bad special effects and all - of the originals.
About The Doctor's motivation, the reason he ends up in many odd places is that he is manipulated by the Time Lords - at least in the Baker era shows. Also "The Key to Time" series is self explanatory. _________________ ----------------------------------------

Jon Pertwee,
When I was a kid I was in a train cabin with him , whilst he was the doctor. He bough me chocolate . I was bought chocolate by DR WHO !!!!! 35 years later I still remember everything about that moment. |

The Doctor is a renegade Time Lord and wanderer in Space and Time
His old Type 40 Time Capsule, the TARDIS, is telepathic and sentient and often seems to go where it thinks the Doctor needs to be
Which is a good enough reason for him always ending up in trouble and having to save the day _________________ I just like weird music and adventures in sound |

I recommend watching the episode that starts with the word "the".
And another vote for baker. The ark in space is on Netflix and is classic who IMO. |
