So will we be able to add our own modules (sorry if this has been answered)?

There is a lot of small runs of great DIY panels and I would like to be able to use them in a planner.

Yes...

OT i guess: for the DIYers: how about an option to integrate dIY modules ? or is that a unrelated task ?. hmmm, ...is there a how to anywhere to bring modules into a modular planner ? ( integrate a how to as help file maybe wink )

Not OT at all. If the DIY modules conform to a standard size (Euro, 5U etc) then it's really simple to 'roll your own' modules and even simpler to add them into my 'module tree' for use with this planner. I'll add a module creation tutorial to the documentation, and maybe even a module creator function in a later version. Good call!

Clicking on any knob overlay and moving the mouse up/down now rotates that knob as planned. I really need to do a YouTube vid to show all progress to date. Hopefully I'll get time tomorrow.

Rich So I assume now I could add the patch cords, set the knob postions and save as a layout/patch?

Brilliant.

That's the idea. A plan file will contain all racks, modules and overlays used. All overlays have a setting - patch cords have start and end positions, knobs have values as do switches, sliders and buttons. These settings are also stored within the plan file and are set my clicking/dragging the overlays.

In order get the best use out of overlays a process will need to be run to define control and jack positions, descriptions etc. This will need to be done once for each module you want to get this extended functionality from. This mechanism is yet to be coded (I measured and hard-coded the positions of the uLFO knobs and sockets so that I could check my code was working) but I envisage moving a crosshair over a control, setting its centre point and radius then adding some text to say what it is. Should be fairly quick and easy. I hope that this info will be added as standard to module definitions as time goes on and will work with the people who manage the standards and host the module files to make this happen.

Once these definitions have been added to a module, the control and socket positions appear as hotspots to which the overlays snap when dragged on.

What we're heading towards is a system that not only shows a visual of a patch, but also a descriptive textual interpretation that'll be much easier to interpret than the picture alone. I'm thinking like...

1) Patch Doepfer A-145 LFO sine output to Doepfer A-110 VCO CV1 input
2) Set Doepfer A-145 LFO frequency knob to 6

Options could include 'hide manufacturer name' and 'use short names' to simplify/shorten the description...

1) Patch A-145 sine out to A-110 CV1 in
2) Set A-145 freq knob to 6

Patches could be stepped through with each step's control or patch lead being highlighted in a different colour on the plan so in step 1) above the patch lead would be highlighted and in step 2) the freq knob would be highlighted.

I imagine that ultimately the plan steps could be output as a nicely formatted sequential document (think LEGO building instructions with pictures and text).

Just ... MY ASS IS BLEEDING

Big kudos to you! This looks like a dream come true. Actually every time I check this thread you've added more impressive features.

How about getting this thing out for some feedback? I fear that you'll only stop when the planner is a virtual synthesizer that sounds like the real thing lol

Brilliant... I thought the the patch cables moving with the modules was very cute..but actually now I've realised the genius in documenting the kind of patch you make a lot... And then rearranging modules to get the most efficient layout of modules.

Maybe you could even calculate the layout which utilises the shortest possible cable lengths.

Sorry for all my glue sniffing ideas Mr. Green

I can forsee a time when the module zips available via the eurorackdb and bananaplug's lilbrary contain the control positions specific to the photo included in each zip. As you can imagine, each photo of a particular module has slightly different positioning of each control so it makes sense that:

1) A module zip comes with the correct overlay positions already set, and
2) You have a mechanism to make your own zips or alter the overlay positions if you update your module's photo.

This all sounds a bit fiddly, but rest assured that what I have planned won't be difficult to use at all - even if you ended up having to set up each of your modules yourself in the early days. I'd imagine less than 5 minutes work to set up a module such as the uLFO with knob sizes/positions, socket and switch positions and descriptive text.

it seems worth having a centralised effort to mark up modules maybe?

I don't think you'll struggle to get volunteers.

having a trusted or official set for commercial modules would make layouts a lot more portable.

What Steve said grin

Rich I was just thinking along the lines of sharing a couple of hours effort to help fellow wigglers (or just plundering other peoples work nanners )

either way would be be a nice to have feature

And as you have probably already gathered your sucess so far will have tons of feature creep suggestions (or new functionality if you want to look at it professionally)

Awesome work.
Have you thought about being able to add things like Dark Energy and Telemark? I've an S1 that's an integral part of nearly everything modular I do, I imagine there're lots in that boat

Maybe as a feature in a later version. I think any outboard gear would need to be generic as to try and cater for everything would be impossible. If you could have a named 'black box' with a number of patchable audio and cv inputs and outputs then that would get at least part of the way there. But maybe like A100user and Monobass have said - if the community had an easy way to define such items then it might just happen.

There's a FaceBook page now for the planner - please head over and 'like' it and leave a message if you have a minute....

http://www.facebook.com/RichyHosRackPlanner

There's a link on there to a high def version of the latest youtube video which is a lot less fuzzy when viewed at 720p.
