I'm feeling like the hero character in a greek epic, about to embark on an odyssey, for I've officially started my first module build: hex inverter's nein oh nein bass drum. hyper

An exciting moment for me, it's been fun getting to this point, and I'm looking forward to future builds.

So, this brings me to all of you...

what was your first DIY?

what "infected" you with the itch to build modulars?

My dad bought me a theremin kit way back in the late 60's - early 70's, not really sure exactly when. I put it together - or rather, mostly watched him put it together, and it actually made a sound! Not really well, it had a lot of trimmers and I never really figured out how to calibrate it so it would work correctly and/or consistently. However, I learned some basic soldering from that.

My current DIY experience started in 2003 - I bought a bunch of kits, most of the Paia 9700 ones that were available at the time, a few Blacet ones, and some MOTM ones. The Paia ones were the first ones I attempted, and the first one didn't work at all. The second one worked partly, and I had a glimmer of hope finally. I attempted the MOTM (a 380 Quad LFO) and it worked perfectly! And still does. I ended up building up almost all of the MOTM kits, and a bunch of Blacet ones. And I ended up building a second Paia midi2cv modules, which worked, and after some fine tuning used it for quite a while for midi to modular duties.

me too lol

the blue spikes didn't happen, the rest of it did

PAIA fatman as well! useless piece of garbage. I even did all the mods I could find and put it in a custom case all fancy like. Sometimes I turn it on just for fun, but it is so useless to me.

I want to do YuSynth stuff but am intimidated by the DIY PCB...Ive never really messed with perf board either, just breadboarding.

good to know! ive thought about this kit many times.

single channel http://www.jlmaudio.com/Baby_Animal_Mic_Pre.htm with DI. dead easy to build, sounded superb, finally sold it some time ago because i decided to build a new one with 2 channels.

Actually the Fatman has been a nice... midi interface for my CS-5 when i still had it. But I agree, it's not a great synth smile

this looks useful!

I think it was this, in 2006

http://nearworlds.org/stuff/diy/synth/synth.mp3

A cmos/schmitt based oscillator with the WSG filter tacked on. Or maybe it was most of the WSG with some mods. I can't remember.

I started on pedals and synth boxes well before I even bought my first module (recently).

cloudscape: this is what I did. I just finished MFOS experimenter board, building a case and wiring now. I started with GetLofis delay, synthroteks nandamonium, novadrone, was hooked hard! It's peanut butter jelly time!

With the DI addon it's really cool as synth / bass guitar frontend as well, if you need a compact & superb sounding mic pre you could do much worse.

I just have a stereo piezo instrument I want to preamplify now, so I decided to build a dual channel version with _very_ high impedance DIs on both channels. Choosing somewhat different transformer + opamp configuration just for fun as well.

I also started with the PAIA Fatman in 2007. It got boring rather quickly.

My first modular build was the PAIA 9700 VCO. It never worked right. A few months ago it occurred to me that I may have wired some of the switches on the jacks wrong since I was using mismatched 1/4" jacks on a homebrew panel. d'oh!

Jean-Michel Jarre's "Oxygene" was what got me into all this craziness.

definetly gonna peep this further later

my first working DIY was the WTPA, later i made a panel and little box with onboard psu for it:

probably not a suprise to many, but my first project was a 303 clone. i wish i had a picture of it, my god it was ugly. i saw genoqs do a live set, and afterwards he very enthusiastically showed me his 303, including opening up the battery compartment to show the serial number, which was the same as his birthday. i had never heard of a 303 before, but he explained that it was the thing that made acid. thats all i needed to hear - i went home, downloaded schematics off the web, taught myself electronics, and built it. it didnt sound much like a 303, but i learned a lot.

I first built a MFOS WSG. I won't post pictures because it's a mess, but it works.

I've also built the Novadrone (which I love), an Echobase Delay pedal (which is also very cool), a piezo buffer, and a light to sound circuit.

I've not built any proper modules yet, but am slowly amassing pcb's for the ones that really get me excited. Most of what I have is NLC, but CGS Serge stuff is next on the list to acquire.

Mine was an Oakley Little LFO that I did on a 4hp Euro panel because I was told it wasn't possible. 8_)

Things sure have changed in the last 5 years...

After that it was a TWLPG. I still have both modules. SlayerBadger!
modintx
Mine was a Shruthi kit from Mutable Instruments, then built the Ambika 6 voice synth right after it :-)

Now building first Serge panel...
