Robert Rich, Steve Roach, Michael Stearns, vidnaObmana, Forrest Fang, Jeff Greinke... the works.

You might also like my own "ceasing to exist" and "lament" albums I recorded in collaboration with touch-guitar player Markus Reuter.

maybe healer - wonderground?
or is this already too new age?

available for free (legal) here: http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/healer-wonderground

I especially dig those 2:

this forum has taken a serious beating so embedding videos doesnt seem to work any more.

ambient synth music looks like its split in 3 factions. one is the drone army, lots of legato synths and reverb/delay which usually makes anything sound good. then there is the berlin school sequencing faction with fast sequences and harmonic structures ... and then there is the new age stuff which is usually just made to sound relaxing.

the interesting releases to me are the ones that use those methods but manage to compose some interesting music in between the lines. here is a good example. yamaneko-pixel healing spa ... sounds like an 80s videoconsole soundtrack but there is a lot more going on.

Watching this topic for the education Guinness ftw!

I really like Drone Zone - Soma FM when chilling out. They post every artist and track they play, so it would be easy to get new ideas. It is mostly drones but maintains a good variety.
Ginko
Yes I have learned of a few nice artists through Soma.FM

Alva Noto's "For 2", or any like Raster-Noton release, may be what the doctor ordered.

Bee Mask maybe? That 'pixel healing spa' track reminds me a bit of this:

"Stars of the Lid" are one of the best in the ambient genre.

Spacetime Continuum's Fluresence ep would fit in nicely here

Also check out Roswell Return's Probe #5 ep. Sounds like someone suspended dub techno in a cube of formaldehyde

"language barrier" by lusine

live performance "between us and it" by brian eno & j. peter schwalm
(beautiful voice-effects going along with some familiar themes, like the concise screw sound from ikebukuro being featured in so many eno-installations, and stuff in variations)
Hermetech Mastering
My friend Matt makes amazing ambient music under the name of Ishq. Deserves to be far better known.

Tim Hecker. Lawrence English. Casino vs Japan.

thanks for all the good suggestions, here is another very unusual gem: neel - phobos. i would love to find out how that was done, amazing sound design. not really synth music but feels the same to me.

i find it really difficult do find anything that makes sense to listen to in that area. everybody seems to be cranking out "productions". run some sequences through gobs of reverb give it a cool name, ambient album done. we need more noise filtering devices ;-)
Aaronautical001
Thomas koner and Nicholas Szczepanik are two I would add to the drone camp. Love the stuff by vlasdislav delay as well as mentioned by op.
lilakmonoke
right ... i already have drones that will last me a lifetime! let me counter this with new berlin school: steve hauschildt - tragedy & geometry. some tracks on this album are synth noodling but this one is brilliant structural sequencing, all out of a dsi prophet 8 btw. ... somebody wrote "not from this planet" in the comments. thats exactly the stuff im looking for :-)

I did some stuff in this sort of vein in my bandcamp EP "Three assemblages", you might enjoy it.

Personally though I'm finding the purely electronic sound a bit sterile these days... Kalerne has put out some lovely work by himself and others in the ambient/field recording/electronics area, well worth checking out.

"Chants of Frozen Lakes" and "Hares and Bells" are two of my favourites. Don't know if that sort of thing might interest you.

I quite enjoyed the playlist at the end of this article

I knew most of it but found some gems unknown to me, too.

+1 for Kalerne!
And for you Strettara thumbs up
Actually i tend to prefer Timelapse over Three Assemblage, "Eight" is way cool, thx!

Apologies for a shameless promotion but my last album on Kranky was entirely synth based. I'm currently working on the second release of this nature. Embedding doesn't seem to be working.

And a +1 for M. Geddes Gengras. I'm really enjoying his latest work.

Thanks for the introduction to Yamaneko!! Bought the album.

I have that Neel "Phobos" record, it's a good one. thumbs up Recent Pulse Emitter, "Spiritual Vista", "Euphoria" or "Cosmic Images" might be good. I think he has a bandcamp page where you can listen to some, not sure about that though. If you like that Steve Hauschidlt I would check out this: http://www.discogs.com/Various-Air-Texture-Volume-IV/master/760816 Also, you could check out Brother Raven, I've been listening to "Nellie" lately. Bee Mask's "Canzoni Dal Laboratorio Del Silenzio Cosmico", Guenter Schlienz's "Through Music To The Self".....You should also check out Donato Dozzy "Donato Dozzy Plays Bee Mask", nice ambient-like record. 8_)
