screws for the blue rack frames? |
br>Nelson Baboon |
br>Sorry - I'm kind of clueless when it comes to stuff like this....
when I got my system, no screws were sent with it, so I 'punted' and used some eurorack screws, which don't fit very well at all.
Can someone possibly link me to some that I can order, that will actually fit the case well? I'd appreciate it. br> br> |

br>You may now want to refer to The Big R.A.P. (rack assembly pamphlet) that I sent you a month back ;-)
Optimally, you would know which screw diameter AND thread type was used before. Without that, there can be no firm advice on what screws to use. Using a different thread type than before will probably wear out the holes, which *can* mean reduced grip and continuing problems each time you want to swap a module.
I did have that problem, and additionally have one module with slightly off-center mounting holes, so I much prefer Hinton's bars that use through-hole bolts with counter-nuts. You can always use these new bars with the old blue rack ears, so my personal advice is to order one pair of these, or, like I'm planning for my older frame with the messed up self-tapped holes, (quote Graham) "drill the original one(s) out to 4mm, except the end holes which cross a bolt". br> br> |

br>Nelson, I have a bag of allen-head blue bolts that fit the regulation blue rack frames...but if you've used different threads things may be messed up?
PM me a mailing address and I'll send you a set. br> br> |

And if you do want to go that route I'm offering my own set I got from plord in 2013, so both your frames would be covered.
These are very pretty, but I found the heads too small even with stiff nylon washers underneath; I think the large panels need more surface/ more leverage to pin them down = less flexing when patching. br> br> |

I was given a link to order these, and the first one I tried to put in broke off in the hole, and I can't get it out. So, I'm wary...(though I wasn't using an allen) br> br> |

Hi,
I've got some of the correct screws, and if you can email me and let me know how many you need, I can either send you some, or tell you what to buy/where to buy them. It's a US thread and size, not metric.
If you have tried to put the wrong screws in already though, unfortunately, you've probably ruined the tapped holes on the bars. Aluminium is soft, much softer than a steel screw.
ETA: they are 4/40 x 1/4" machine screws. br> br> |

br>oh, joy.....well, probably it'd be cheaper to order them here, rather than have you ship them to me. that's lovely if I've ruined the holes though.

Hopefully they are OK; it's definitely still worth trying the right screws to see.
If not, please get in touch and I'm sure I can come up with a solution to fix the bars by either re-tapping them or drilling out to a larger size. There are options!
In future, a couple of tips:
1. If a screw doesn't go in easily and smoothly, something is wrong. Don't force it. It's either the wrong screw or the thread is crossed.
2. Be gentle and never over-tighten screws into threaded holes, especially aluminium. Just tight enough so it doesn't come out, but no further. br> br> |

well, i don't have good common sense when it comes to this stuff. I don't recall forcing them to much, so hopefully it will be ok. br> br> |

Hope so! Let me know what happens. It really depends how different the threads are on the screws you put in, and I'm afraid I have no idea. Good luck/fingers crossed! br> br> |

well, I got the modules and the cases, and realized I didn't have screws, so I just used generic eurorack screws. They at least held the modules in... br> br> |

but I'm not looking to spend more money because I've ruined the holes here, unless I have to. br> br> |

Don't see why they wouldn't. Not as pretty as round head ones, but they are the right size, so you ought to be fine. br> br> |
