Braids DIY: encoder?

What are people using as an alternative to the ridiculously-hard-to-get-hold-of encoder?

I've seen the thread and gone through every page of it but there doesn't seem like a clear winner.

hmmm.....

I just looked at the braids schematics and board, it seems to use an ordinary rotary encoder with switch, they can be had easily, no? or am I missing something?

have you got any encoders to hand you could try on the pcb to see if one fits?

There is a bees in the trees firmware that is made for a reversed encoder.
av500
ah my bad, I get the problem now, the encoder is reversed. so alternative firmware, or cutting and rewiring 2 PCB traces...

I ordered this for mine

I just noticed another on the Farnell site, cheaper and has a longer shaft. Maybe better for the job. I've ordered both...

The fix for the backwards encoder in the firmware is trivial - see https://github.com/timchurches/Mutated-Mutables/blob/master/braids/dri vers/encoder.h#L64

The encoders have arrived and my choice would be the Bourns longer shaft model (the second link I posted above), for the following reasons, the thread is tall enough to be bolted to the panel, and once cut to the same height, the set screw will bite against the solid shaft (unless you prefer to use D shafts, which also work out good).
The worst was the recommended one from Mouser; plastic shaft, too small, and no thread whatsoever (as you can see in the photo).

This is what I used: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5PCS-Rotary-encoder-with-switch-EC11-Audio-dig ital-potentiometer-handle-20mm-/191674447648?hash=item2ca0aff720

Works and feels fine, not reversed either. Ordered 30 so I can use those in my Midibox SEQ as well.

any chance anyone out there could compile a v1.8 braids backwards encoder wav file for me? i don't know if i am good enough to do it....

I was doing this fix tonight so thought I'd share the firmware in case anyone else needs it.

858-EN11-HSM1BF20 is the right device, it's not backwards. The bourns parts work in reverse.

To deal with the height issue, simply buy an extra nut and use it under the panel. ( https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Eagle-Plastic-Devices/48AN007?qs= sGAEpiMZZMtFmYSM%2fWUJwsXnGnuBfRdpor0r%252bAfARQA%3d )

Another member just asked me for the .hex file and I figured others might need it as well so here it is.
