Telephone Game - For expert wigglers only?

Post by rayultine » Tue May 24, 2016 1:10 pm

Hey all,
I am hoping to start building my first rack this summer.
Here's what the proposal looks like, in left to right/top to bottom order of the modules I hope to get.

I've fallen in love with the Telephone Game youtube vids, and I like the idea of some of its mysterious features and unpredictability. But is it too much of a wild horse for someone who is just getting into modular synthesis (but has been working with non-modulars and softsynths his entire adult life)?

These threads have been helpful:

It's clear that the TG is a weirdo, but the feature list is also quite long and seemingly full of more "normal" modular functionality. Would it be possible to start a thread on how to make the TG behave conventionally? Am I making any sense? Do I need to be talked out of or further talked into have the Telephone Game high on my priority list?

I too am intrigued and I've been into eurorack for a year or so. I would say in all honesty that it might be an idea to wait so you can get more out of it perhaps. I think it comes down to how much you are ok which not knowing what you are doing, I would recommend a good while just befriending yourself with CV first. Maybe get a couple of sample and holds and see how you get on with them :-D

Heh. I've got a budgeted starter rack planned out, and it's fairly simple monosynth + disting mk3 + a bunch of utilities. So the Telephone Game would be the gonzo element of the synth:

I wonder if it would be a good pair with a Brain Seed?

I'm a little late to the thread, but I love TG and I think other people would too (if only they could understand it).

It was one of the first modules I got, and I love it. It's in nearly every patch. The manual is a bit of a shambles, and not many people discuss it. It's hard to figure out what it can do for you until you have it in front of you.

If you have no idea yet what you'd use S&H for, then it's probably not right for you yet. If, however, you're in the market for a huge amount of S&H plus a lot of room to explore and experiment, you can't go wrong.

I'd be up for exchanging tips with other users in a dedicated thread.

One of my primary uses for it, before getting sequencers, was as a awmi-random drum/melody sequencer with 1/3/5 triggering, somewhat randomly, drums and sum/slew driving pitch CVs. Very satisfying.

I really enjoy letting TG do some improvisation by itself. With a fairly slowish lfo going into the input with a fairly quick clock gives some great results.
