Hi Tony, this is a really old question, which I remembered yesterday when fixing an early module based on a pre-populated board:
What solder did you use back then and how did you clean the boards after populating? I again realised yesterday: they are so clean! wink

The solder I used for the pre-pop PCBs, and will continue to use for home projects, is 60/40 Sn/Pb 0.7mm diameter Hydro-X from Multicore. It's water washable which is why it looks so clean.

Items like pots and trimmers are soldered on with either ersin (Rosin) flux based or 'no-clean' 60/40 solder. I normally wash off the excess flux with a cotton wool bud and IPA.

I like shiny boards. Which has probably no benefit other than to look nice.

Thanks for the info, Michael.
