Looking for disturbing material to sample?

Post by savagebeautysound » Tue Feb 28, 2017 10:55 pm

Just a brief note: if anyone here is looking for disturbing spoken-word recordings they can sample, you might check out some of the "vocal stylings" of the infamous Wikipedia stalker Andrew Morrow. He is in Santa Clara County Jail right now for making unwanted phone calls like this.

Goiks: A eurorack setup is a contemporary folk instrument. Relatively accessible and portable. Largely by, of and for the people.

I got a clip of a phone interview with Charles Manson, that was made a few years ago.
After listening to it several times, picking out the tonalities and phrases to sample, I figured life's too short to waste on the guy.
Not sure what creeps me out more, him or the girls who followed him.

After researching this AMorrow thing, I would never use any recording by AMorrow as it publicizes a nutjob. It's terrible that someone like cooties has to go through that. I mean...WTF?

But hey, that's me.

Far off topic now...I would use samples recorded by me regarding using disturbing speech. 'cos I know it hasn't ever actually been used or directed at someone. Otherwise you're just dredging up the past for some stranger who would like to remain in the shadows and not be reminded of it.

'nuff said.

Yeah, that is a touchy subject.
I'm a fan of a lot of acts that are into sampling edgy things. I've done a fair amount myself. But there is a line there.
By way of an allegory or metaphor or similie:
A person I went to see speak about photography said they never take photos of homeless people. Most folks who are homeless will make for a compelling photograph. They have a lot of detail to capture, and often are dirty, unkempt and interesting looking.
However, they do not have the privilege of privacy that us non-homeless have. And no small amount of homeless are suffering through mental health issues. For this reason, the speaker said they just don't go there. Plenty of other people to take photos of.

Likewise, sampling edgy folks like Manson, Jim Jones, and so on. You may get some choice nuggets. But then you are kind of preying on the mental illness of some of these folks, or the victims they left behind.
And then there is the question of what will the relatives think?

Unless you are an extremely popular musician, I wouldn't be concerned that it "publicizes a nutjob" such as Charles Manson who is way more famous than you are.

There is plenty of crazy stuff on YouTube. This includes radio broadcasts, public access TV, etc. that people put out themselves, with the intention of reaching an audience.

What I have been doing for a while, is just recording people talking in public places. I got this great one of a guy in Penn Station talking about his military service, and how he is a real man and a bunch of other cartoonish bullshit about his masculinity.
Which I then processed the daylights out of because all I had to record with was an iPhone.

Answer-phone archive is a useful source of odd/abusive lo-fi stuff.

http://answerphone.tumblr.com

There's a handy zip of some of them (in RAW format) made for Radio Music.

Clips of US politicians in Washington is as sickening as Charlie ever was. Charlie was smarter and didn't bath as much.

I prefer NASA sound clips.

Of course films are a great source.

Some of my favorite tracks from the 80's industrial sampling heyday are by Clock DVA. As a teenager I bought their The Act EP and it blew my mind because I thought some of the lengthy spoken word pieces were from "real" recordings. Later I learned they just had great taste in films/samples.

Sonology of Sex, monologue from the film Klute.

The Connection Machine, monologue from The Conversation

Has anyone checked out the recent Conspiracy tapes stuff from The Black Dog ?

it's pretty cool - really lovely ambient soundscapes overlaid with often some pretty dark voice recordings...
