The masters of psychedelic music started back in the late '60's in London. The band has gone through so many personnel changes it is impossible to count. But, the leader has remained a constant for nearly 50 years.

I am, of course, talking about:

HAWKWIND screaming goo yo w00t we're not worthy woah It's peanut butter jelly time!

Some people sure have a broad definition of "psychedlic"...but like all terms for genres it's very subjective, so fair enough I guess.
Here are some of the first examples that came to mind for me:

13th Floor Elevators/Roky Erikson (real pioneers, garage psych)
The Legendary Pink Dots
Can, Faust, early Popol Vuh & Ash Ra Templ maybe? (arguable-many would classify these as "prog or avante garde krautrock"- some overlap) Cosmic Couriers?
Early Tangerine Dream (pre Phaedra)
Early Pink Floyd (pre Meddle)-legendary light shows at the UFO club. Syd Barrett basically defines the concept of "psychedelic".
Dukes of Stratosphear (XTC's tribute to 60s psychedelia)

60s bands like-
Chocolate Watchband
Lothar and the Hand People
Electric Prunes
United States of America
Blue Cheer
Strawberry Alarm Clock
HP Lovecraft
and other more well known groups: Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, etc.

You can also add the following groups to the list:

Red Crayola's first album
The Seeds
Gong
Early Pere Ubu
Amon Duul II
Pink Fairies

Good call on all! Don't know how I could have left out Gong-the Flying Teapot trilogy of albums in particular is classic psychedelia! Pothead Pixies w00t

Oh yeah-how about Ozric Tentacles?

Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation is a nice merger of punk, post punk, and psychedelia.

This is such an incredibly vast topic. Basically anything I would be interested in is in some way psychedelic.

There are literally a trillion subgenres, micro genres, where to start????

One such microgenre, I'd say is populated by bands like F/i, High Rise, Subarachnoid Space, Follakzoid -- that is bands influenced by Hawkwind, Neu, Chrome, and various Uli Trepte projects (Guru Guru, Spacebox)... have to think of a good name but always looking for recommendations along these lines

Oh -- and as far as the early electronic stuff, would be good to mention Zorch (all-EMS outfit, played tons of the free festivals in early 1970's). A very English take on the Berlin school, perhaps more directly connected to the FSOL/Orb/early trance etc. mentioned at the beginning of the thread.

This recorded in 1975:

Like others have mentioned, everyone will have a different opinion on what is defined as psychedelia

But in my opinion Animal Collective are modern masters of creating that feel despite being very different to the more obvious artists from the 60's, FSOL, Orb etc

Jean-pierre Massiera is a mastermind of psychedelia.
