New Easel Owner - how to set MIDI channel?

Author New Easel Owner - how to set MIDI channel?
softroom
My Easel arrived today - lots to learn. One of my first patches was fast and percussive and I fancied sequencing it from a MIDI sequencer. Trouble is the Easel seems to default to Omni mode. I tried powering up holding down a key to set the channel as that seemed the most obvious thing, but it made no difference. Any suggestions gratefully received. wink

Kinda sad that such an expensive piece of gear doesn't ship with a manual and that the manual you can download is from 1973 but such is life. Can anyone shed light on the MIDI spec and functionality?

cheers
rayce
As far as I know the Easel only operates in Omni mode.

Unbelievable! So MIDI is basically so you can clock the arpeggiator?

Clock, Note and gate - but it will listen to all channels at the same time so no good in a MIDI chain.

You could probably get around this with something like an iConnect MIDI 2+ box, filtering one of the outputs to only send the data from your chosen Easel channel and pass the rest to the other output and on to your other gear.

Or you could go down this route: https://www.schneidersladen.de/en/synovatron-cvgt1.html

Yeah, I've been looking at that module. It's just very frustrating that they put MIDI on it but did the work on a Friday afternoon when stoned. I actually checked with the shop before buying and they thought there was a power on option to set the channel - but were unable to tell me what it was. Now I know why!

A disappointing start to my relationship with this instrument. I already knew about the wobbly knobs, lack of manual and external power supply but hoped that was the extent of the shortcuts.

Many thanks, hopefully the love will start growing soon.

I find that its an instrument that begs to be played rather than controlled. Its a wonderfully compact and functional interface.

Hello softroom - I've a few pieces of kit which hold to the same constraint as the BEMI Easel and there's some good kung fu to employ with the MIDI Solutions box here: http://www.midisolutions.com/prodepp.htm

It's handy for all sorts of things but it can be used to ensure that particularly promiscuous MIDI devices acknowledge individual channels. Not an ideal solution, but a solution! smile

Good points and I don't necessarily disagree*. I just happened to make this groovy sound I wanted to sequence from my regular MIDI sequencer. If they had even done the (stupid) thing Korg did with the MS20 Mini and give it a single fixed channel I could have done what I wanted. The Omni mode thing is either laziness or incompetence - which would be annoying on a budget synth.

* although the uniform layout of the sliders surely invites accidental tuning cockups by accidentally touching the wrong one sometimes, say live. I mean Even the ARP Odyssey puts its coarse tune in a conspicuous place. Still, this is day 1 and I have the good stuff still to find wink

Cheers. I'll see if Buchla offer to tidy up their work, get it right since they started it, you never know. But I can also, on the occasions I want to sequence it, use another sequencer (Cirklon) which has lots of MIDI ports and therefore more options for juggling instruments around.

errr.Yes.. because you can´t clock the arp and play MIDI notes at the same time.. it hangs... If you want to play notes youmust disable MIDi clock send from your device... Dead Banana

I've not tried it yet but possibly not: Easel Sync

NIce! I think I need to go shopping for an Atmel debugger...
