Arithmetic sequencing on the Buchla

Author Arithmetic sequencing on the Buchla

Almost 6 years ago, Djangosfire posted a cool video about building percussion patches with a 266e, a 281e (set up as a cascade of CV OUT -> Pulse In), a 285e, and an oscillator.

I replicated the patch, then adapted it to my purposes, adding in a 262v, clocking the initial 281e from an LFO (instead of putting it in self-wiggle mode), and using a 256e to give me customizable inputs to the CV summing operation. Djangosfire video presented a bunch of "found" settings that sounded really cool. I made a performance video to explain what I'm calling an "arithmetic sequencer". Instead of a matrix or a graph (like the DARF or MARF or Genqocs or Tenori-On, the mathematics of the cascading pulses and sampled sums of (simply transformed) output voltages can itself be a sequencer with very musical properties. By "playing" the sequencer, this is demonstrated.

The result is something that organically goes from Bach-like preludes to John McLaughlin's Dance of Maya. See if you don't hear that starting to build from 6:20-6:30 before I go all in at 6:40-6:50:

Man, that is some radical shit, there. I don't completely get what is going on, but that is a kickass patch you've got going there. Cool system, too.

Really great stuff.
I'm always looking for ways to create playable patches - and this kind of cascading LFO thing is a big part of that.

Also impressed you even got Django's tone right smile

Thanks! You are right about it being a "playable patch". I've got a few other videos that basically use the same patch, but with little tweaks (to the knobs, not the wires) they go in very different directions. It's been an epiphany for me!

Wonderful patch/music Michael! Finally had some time to give this a proper listen - I'm glad you found some inspiration from my experiments! smile

Thank you for sharing! cool Guinness ftw!

I'll be rolling out more videos from the same patch over the next few weeks. It's amazing how far one can go with just small tweaks to the knobs!

I just posted a ~30 minute video that delves into this topic at length:

Included in the video are illustrations I created with R and screenshots from Audacity and the web. Enjoy!
