Casper electronics rungler clock buffer mod

I've been playing around with a few rungler type circuits, and came accross the casper electronics mod for buffering the 3 bits of the rungler that go into the r2r dac - and I'm wondering if anyone can help shed a bit of light on what's going on there.

It looks like an emitter follower, but where the output is taken from the base of the transistor - is this a mistake, or am I misunderstanding how the transistor would operate in this mode?

Shouldn't it look something like this?

The Casper circuit is an LED driver.

The output goes straight out to the jack more or less unchanged, but also drives the base of the transistor. When the output goes high, the transistor conducts and the LED switches on.

The circuit you have drawn is indeed a buffer which also halves the output voltage level.

Yup, I'm an idiot not noticing that was an led! d'oh!
