Hi,

I'm not well versed on impedance matching and phantom power and all that stuff...

Tried to google, but just got more confused.

I have a SM58, and i'd like to plug into my cassette 4 track (Yamaha MT8x). The recorder has no XLR input.

Do I HAVE to get a mic preamp? Can I just get a XLR to 1/4inch adaptor? I've seen these 'transformer' connectors too - which convert impedances or something like that hmmm.....

Can any guide me please?

If you already have a XLR to XLR cable, you can buy an adapter. Otherwise buy an XLR to 1/4 Jack cable. No need to buy a preamp, your recorder already has them. The SM58 does not need phantom power to operate.

Yep on this. Simple as it gets - if its an intended mic input. I have a Vestax mixer with 1/4" mic inputs, perfectly powers an SM-57 (the brother of the 58) with no issues and clear amplified sound.

There might be a small issue with your Yamaha needing balanced or unbalanced but this should work in 90% most circumstances: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PXF110--hosa-pxf110-10-foot

EDIT: Here on the manual it's suggesting an insert cable for the mic input, but that could just be to route effects sends. Page 14: http://thesnowfields.com/manuals/MT8X.pdf
