XERXES 8-voice polysynth by Black Corporation

Post by Pando » Tue Sep 18, 2018 2:52 pm

Black Corporation (the manufacturer of Deckard's Dream and the upcoming Kijimi synthesizers) announced Xerxes, a new 8-voice polysynth, on September 2, 2018 at Synthposium in Moscow.

Not much detail is available yet. Panel layout resembles Elka Synthex with several additional features.

It will be likely available both pre-built and DIY.

We had it at NAMM with all 40 Synthex factory patches loaded.

Here's Paul Schilling playing the Linnstrument via MPE, casually jamming the Laser Harp preset.

very nice demos Pando. so very musical
xerxes can hit that brass sounds very well, with even the subtle growl emulating the harder part of a player’s breath

are you using the Midiboard to get this expression? polyphonic aftertouch is so awesome, such a shame no one is making a modern keyboard with PolyAT. I think i would prefer that even to MPE (which to me is hard to play in a keyboard style)

Thanks! Yes, I'm using the Midiboard. I had a chance to compare it to CS80's keyboard. Midiboard's aftertouch is much much more sensitive and responsive. CS80 was pretty good also, but it had a slight delay when you press the keys and you need to press harder. Midiboard with Xerxes is instantaneous and only requires the softest touch (at its most sensitive setting). It's really amazing how responsive it is, and I sure prefer it over any MPE stuff.

''We recorded this session with Valhalla reverb and a bit of delay''

why? don't do that! or add the same track w/o the effects,so the synth sound can be checked properly :despair:

This was just an impromptu session, we didn't even plan to record it initially.

Detailed sound samples (dry) are coming later, and there are already a few out there that don't have much reverb.

Top notch quality demos! Very musical and highly expressive.
The laser harp sound is practically identical

How close is the xerxes to the synthex in terms of schematics and components?

In your comparison test, what is the xerxes? I think is the first one

Thanks,

Analog circuitry is closely designed to have exactly the same waveforms. It's not identical, but the resulting sound is the same, indistinguishable to the point where there are actually larger differences in individual Synthexes, their tuning, etc. Digital circuitry is completely different where it doesn't impact sound.

In the Laser Harp comparison test, yes, first is Xerxes, second is Synthex with the repeated notes. The theme in the end is played with Xerxes, and the very last note is repeated with Synthex. I posted this to GS a while ago where everyone guessed it wrong :)

https://soundcloud.com/user-635888456/x ... comparison

Pretty much all Synthex factory sounds are like that, they sound the same in every respect. How close you'll get really depends on how well you know the original knob settings. I went as far as comparing ADSR envelopes, pulse widths, etc. with an oscilloscope against the original to really dial in the factory sounds.

No one can guarantee that, with any product. But I've had some time to test it, and it's pretty darn solid.
