Choices Desktop controller

Author Choices Desktop controller

I've been planning to offer a Desktop variant of the Choices module for quite some time now, but other projects took priority. However, a customer got tired of waiting for me and ordered a custom unit (this is what happened with the Infernal Noise Machine as well). When I make prototype units I always order extra PCBs - just in case of random carnage and they're cheaper that way - so why not see if anyone else is interested?

I haven't finished the custom order yet, and his enclosure is a one-off model, but here are the drawings for the enclosure style that will be used for the rest:

In addition to the standard features of the Choices eurorack module, the CH-D prototype has the following:
  • 1/4" Switchraft jacks instead of 3.5mm jacks
  • All electro-mechanical components are long-life versions (100,000 rotation pots, 50,000 or higher cycle switches and jacks)
  • X-Y and X+Y outputs
  • Greatly enlarged control layout for easy, comfortable use
  • Internal power supply with wall adapter

The Trigger and Gate outputs are set for 0V-+8V on the custom unit to accommodate most 5U systems and Moog keyboards, but I can set them to output anything between -11.5V and +11.5V.
Knobs are the same as those used on the INM.
The enclosures are heavy-gauge aluminum housings from Hammond.

They are $250.00 each with the features listed. Lead time is currently 2-4 weeks. I have enough parts for four of these for now.
I have no problem with further customizations, but they will affect he price and lead time. As these are prototypes. the graphics will be overlays or something similar, but I'll do my best to see that they are sufficiently durable. It is also likely that final graphics may be different than shown in the above image - nothing major, but I may tweak them a tad here and there.

Orders are being accepted now. If you are interested, either email me at the flight@ address, or place the order via PayPal with the paypal@ email address - the other part being flightofharmony.com.

I would also love to hear any suggestions or ideas that any of you may have for these. This was a custom design, so it may lack things that you feel are important. Let me know what you think!

A table top choices sounds like an awesome idea! applause

This is just a thought, but would it be possible with a striped down version with just the basic functions, but instead make it dual? I think it would be great to be able to give two (well four, two X and two Y) different control voltages at the same time.

Sure, that's doable. I've thought about doing that before - especially since there is enough room on this panel for two joysticks.
In fact, there is enough room for a full dual setup if you make the layout a bit more dense.

my own recommendation is to put the jacks on the top and not in the back. People will ALWAYS be plugging and unplugging things...

That's one of those divisive issues though - especially with a controller. People tend to be more likely to change what it plugs into rather than what is plugged into it, from my estimation. Same with the "joystick top, jacks below"/"jacks top, joystick below" issue that influenced the design of the Choices module in the first place.

Either way, I plan to offer both styles later on. The jacks-on-top version will have a different housing of course, one with a flat top and slanted front, as the cables would hang in your way otherwise.

dual dual dual! ^_^

Heh, yeah, that would be fun!

And because it would be such fun, here it is:

This is another custom order, designed for Serge use.
Since there were two joysticks, that meant even more output combinations - far too many - thus the function rotary switch, leading to one jack in the rear.

These start at $350, with a 4-6 week leadtime.

Now we're cooking! twisted They both look amazing!

very nice Flight.
dude
fuck yeah!

For some reason seeing f(x) on a module makes my inner math geek happy.

hyper Me too!

Okay, I took a closer look at the layout and realized the Ref toggles couldn't be at the top, so here's the remake. I also finally took into account the non-orthogonal relation of the top & sides, so this one is dimensioned correctly (You're looking straight down at the top, so the front and rear sides are angled downward at 10°).

That dual banana jack one is absolutely kick ass!

Great, now all the other formats are paling in comparison to my lust for a Serge. And that's a good thing.

Wow! we're not worthy

I suppose there's no real reason to make a 3.5mm jack version of these, since us euro folk could just throw two choices modules in a skiff.

Not exactly. The CH-D has the additional outs (X+Y & X-Y), while the CH-2D has its plethora of outs, along with the switch to select even more combinations.

I've also added in an output limiter to the CH-2D to keep the outputs in a safe range (no more ±11V swings).

I am drooling over the dual here. It looks so lovely.

God me too.
Has me thinking about how cool it will be to have a jag even more too.

Any news about that? The dual one!

I'm working on one right now; I hope to have some pictures up next week.

These will definitely be standard products in the future, it's just that the initial production costs for desktop gear is much greater than with modules so it will be a bit before the full production versions are available.

Any update on this? I would be very interested in one!

I'm curious as well if there's any updates to this project smile

I'd also be interested in a double euro style one myself. hihi
