There are so many designs that haven't been released and Grant always has interesting ideas. Fuck that's exciting.

What's new management?

A joke to signify an increase in production speed or different prices?

Or someone else doing the manufacturing?

What's a decent 300 system run new? About 10K?

I love what I have in Euro from Wiard. Never looked heavily into
300 series because I thought it was fairly unobtainable.

If the 300 series didn't exist I would be torn between Serge and Buchla.

Luckily it does exist so I'm not bothered with those concerns.

HOLD ON...

I just saw this:

"A new product line is currently in development"

Does this mean that Malekko and Wiard are parting ways?

Or a new format completely?

I have an order in mind for a 300 series system. I have wanted a 300 series since I was about 19, man they were cheaper back then... I have just always lusted after one, even more so than a buchla 200e or serge.

But, do I abandon the Fenix?

very frustrating very frustrating very frustrating

Sounds more like you need to make up your mind wink

I have a feeling there's going to be a mad rush to try to get 300 systems... seems like that usually happens when the unobtainable becomes obtainable.

I have had communications with Wiard and there is a system available for me if I want it, which I most definitely do.......

Christ, why did Grant Richter and Bert Vermuelen do this to me? Anyone got a spare £5000?

Edit: I shouldn't piss and moan really, it's the nicest problem I've ever had.

this is just pure speculation on my part, and I welcome any more authoritative info on the subject:

Euro Wiard is not going to die... I think Grant has encountered some problems that he wasn't expecting but I have read many posts where he has shown his love for the 'budget' small format modules, and I don't think he is interested in making them himself, and so I believe this is where Malekko fits into the picture. He has made a recent post about what is coming out and it seems unlikely this will change.

However, I believe his favourite work to do is the 300 series.. and I believe this announcement is that the 300 series is again available in small numbers and maybe some new modules in this format.

I get the impression from the Wiard site that the 300 series is almost certainly coming to an end once parts are exhausted. Production of the 300 series has been intermittent in the last few years. They are apparently incredibly time consuming and difficult to build and QT etc... Hence the long waiting lists for those that get on it.

Yeah, probably the Euro will continue... or perhaps he's so frustrated
with the WO and Envelator issues (I don't mind) that's he's scraping
the format completely.

Whatever he does, I think it'll be +15V, star distribution. Maybe
even a dedicated power supply, distribution that he controls and
manufactures. Like Serge + Buchla.

I don't know him, but I can tell by reading that he's a perfectionist.
And he's into his creations functioning as intended, less motivated by
cash, more motivated by creating his perfect instrument.

So now that I think about it, I could see him dropping Euro and
adopting something like Bugbrand/Frac. More affordable but still meeting
his standards.

At the same time, there's hasn't been a new Wiard euro module in
awhile. I love my Wiard/Malekko modules. A lot. So, no disrespect
intended to that partnership. This is pure speculation.

It will be exciting to see what the new product line is. Pretty sure it won't be frac though.

i think this is probably pretty close to the mark. i doubt euro would be abandoned but i could definitely see a new power infrastructure and the re-release of all previous wiard designs in that format. maybe similar in size to the 300 series. it would be pretty hard to deny something like that. it's awesome to see new activity from Wiard that's for sure.

Yeah the site is pretty clear about that. I've heard rumours of "few 300 series parts left" and it seems like they will use up the "VERY LIMITED" components left and that will be the end of 300 series. Then from what I understand there will be something new.

With that said I have a 300 series dual Mixo for sale (yeah sorry to spam this thread) which I foolishly bought last week the day before my basement flooded. Probably one of the last 300 series available so hit me up if interersted....

It's a shame really. The 300 series modules are quite simply incredible in design, what I really love about them is the functional density. I personally hate large modular systems but with the Wiard you can do so much with relatively few modules. The classic VCO for example is a ridiculous module. Not only is it an incredible analogue VCO with more than comprehensive range, modulation and syncing abilities it also has a VCA, mixer, envelope generator, envelope follower, lag processor and god knows what else on it.

I think I might be leaning the Wiard way.

while i really hope the collaboration with malekko isn't coming to an end (my wiard euro modules are my favorite euros, hands down), i think i'm being drawn ever closer to making the plunge into a 300 system...

and no one try to dissuade me wink

an easel type thing could be something new... If by 'easel' you just mean a single package wiard creation meant to be a patchable but ultimately self-contained synth.

I'd rather buy stand alone units that supplied their own power and stuff while still 'playing nice' with the main modular formats in terms of patching than get into an entire new modular format, but that's just me I guess.

It kinda bugs me that the term Easel is getting taken away from the original instrument and is now starting to apply to any small-to-mid size semi portable modular setup

soon enough if you Google "music easel" all you're gonna find is a bunch of people's Eurorack setups help

Well, its not like buchla is doing anything with the name... Weren't like only 14 music easels ever made? If they weren't made of pure unobtainium you'd probably see the name applied more to the original.

The "14 easels" meme is not true. I'm don't know the actual number but I bet it's in the 50-100 range, at least.

It does seem like the Malekko stuff will come to an end after the upcoming modules Grant has said he will be doing, which I think is a real shame, given that most of the problems that occur with euro format (arguably all) can most likely be fixed.

That said, it will be awesome if Wiard modules continue to come out in a different format that is still affordable. Hard to imagine this happening the same way Josh has been able to do it with the big productions runs (and without the market base of euro users), hopefully these two are still working together. Wouldn't mind having a sensible, precise and clean power supply/distribution either.

Gotta be grateful that you can buy a module like the Envelator for $185 new. Regardless of whether I am using some new format or start robbing people to get a 300 system before they are all gone, a case full of Malekko Wiard is going to be next to it.

Of course all of this is entirely speculative and like everyone else I'm eager to get my hands on more Wiard stuff, so talking about it on the internet is what I resort to (instead of making more music).

That'd be cool. I'd like to see him do that 2nd.

First I'm hoping he'll develop the production version of the
Anti-Envelope.

i dont want to rain on anyones parade, but make sure you contact grant before you start dreaming about buying a whole system. unless he reprints more runs of some of the circuit boards some of the modules(borg and mixolator) are not available.

again, i am not speaking for grant. i am just merely passing on info that some may want to know before they start planning a whole system.

Hi there,

Just for clarification, whatever you may have heard in the past has now changed.

We do plan to make all the modules available again, and the initial focus will indeed be on building a small run of full 300 systems for those interested, and completing existing customers' systems.

We have no plans to build more Frac Rack modules, since these have now been replaced by the Malekko Euro line (which will continue to expand).

I can't give you any definite pricing information for new systems yet or answer specific questions yet, because I'm still sorting that out, but if you are definitely interested in making a purchase and know what you want, feel free to email [email protected] early, and I will get a formal quotation prepared as soon as possible (expect to receive responses from the beginning of next month, since that is when I will be officially taking over management, sales, and customer correspondence, freeing Grant's valuable time for design and engineering).

Best wishes,
Cary

This is great news (about Euro, not about Frac). Wiard/Malekko is the only reason I'm starting a small Euro rig this month, since I can't afford the 300 series. It'll take me a couple years to have a decent system.

good to hear about the euro. I already have quite a few of Grant's designs in that format. I'd also possibly be interested in a standalone thing from Grant as well depending on price and form factor.

portable wiard = eurorack in a small case ???

they released a photo of an equivalent to music easel with malekko wiard parts.

If I could afford all 300 series modules I would but I cant. Built for a lifetime... no single comprimise anywhere. Perfect layout and intermodule functionality.

I know I'm in this boat. I've had large and small systems, and the ones that were portable (to some degree at least,) are the ones that I enjoyed the most. Being able to sit away from the studio with it, having some restraint on the amount of functions available, etc. really add to my creativity. If I need more than it provides, I can always go interface with other systems. I happen to be working on one of my own right now, and have custom tailored the function blocks to everything I've wanted in a portable system, but to this point haven't had in one. I think it will be a lot of fun.

Whether one calls it an Easel/Weasel (as a point of reference for others,) is more or less irrelevant. It's the overall concept of a portable yet powerful system that appeals to people. (myself included) There were a lot of times that I would have been able to write music or design sounds outside the studio, but wasn't about to drag a full-depth rack out with me, or a string of smaller boxes. If I had one really good sub-set of functions in a handy box, I could have been creating. I loved my MonoMachine when I had it for this reason, my Serge Creature was up there as well for this sort of thing (but was a little lacking in some functions.) There was always something though that I thought could have been done differently (hence working on my own design now.)

I think the true Easel was implemented quite well, in that it included a really good set of functions that people today are still intrigued by it. (evidenced by this very forum)

To stay semi-on-topic, I'd LOVE to see a Porta-Wiard. Yes, you can build one from Euro modules, which actually works great, but to have one beautiful Wiard box under one panel would be amazingly cool. (I think so anyway.)

Yeah, I saw that photo 208/Malekko comparison. It IS nice. However the one thing that I keep thinking is how better it would be to buy all those modules, create a full-row faceplate that would blend the modules together better, color-code the jacks, and solder all point to a card slot so I can save patches. The fact that I'm so close to actually doing something so damn crazy may be the best reason for someone to just MAKE IT FOR ME ALREADY! hihi

hihi with ongoing long term relationships with Serge, Bugbrand, Cwejman, Hordijk and Walekko I'm skint (forever!) and all formatted out...

But I am still looking for the perfect gigging instrument, as the Blippoo box is the closest I've found I am pretty sure Rob Hordijk will be the guy to make it one day - but I'd be happy to see Grant competing for the job! I love the sound of his stuff

Certainly, small orders are also welcome and appreciated.

Please email [email protected] and request a quotation. Orders will be (generally) prioritized on a first-come/first-served basis.

Is the Omni-Filter going to continue being made? I know this one has super limited stock of parts available... but I can imagine buying the Omni Filter, a Waveform City or a Wogglebug to go with current malekko modules would be really awesome.

Just reread the page...

Maybe there is nothing to wait for. It's just reopening under new
management, but that has already been touched upon here.

Says the new website is coming soon as well as a new product line,
but those aren't tied to May 5th.

Hi all,

Just a quick update:

New 300 price list is almost ready.

Sorry for the slowness, but I'm still waiting too - for a couple more pieces of information to come in from third parties - at which point I can finally finalize the new prices.

No new product announcements yet. Still in development stages. BUT, email list members will be the first to know when something happens, so if you haven't yet, please do head over here and enter your email address and we'll be sure to keep you posted:

http://wiard.com/listform.htm

And if you already know exactly what you want, send me a quote request. Will give those first priority. ( [email protected] ).

Josh and I are still on the best of terms. I will continue doing designs for Malekko and the Euro-rack format. Cary has some very exciting ideas of her own and we will implement them co-operatively. In the meantime, she is physically able to re-issue the 300 series which my back problems keep me from doing myself.

The idea is MORE Wiard designs in any format appropriate for the design. I am very proud of the 300 series and am glad to have them back in production. I am also very proud of what Josh and I have done at Malekko. I like to think we are advancing the state of the art in modular synthesis design and packaging, and plan to continue to do so even more now that I have technical and design assistance.

Cary is a really talented musician and technician and her insights into how to integrate individual parts into complete instruments come from a fresh perspective. So look for more cool stuff to come both in Euro-rack and the "still under development" new packaging.

And thank you all for your ongoing patronage and enthusiasm, which makes doing this so rewarding on a personal level.

And thank you for creating the tools that make sculpting sounds so rewarding.

Seriously, whenever someone is over who doesn't know what a modular synth is, Wiard are the 1st modules I reach for, always.

somewhat offtopic. My boss (a reliable curator of information) says the only medicine for his back that works is green and often smoked.

So does "Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!" is it just an inability to pronounce W's R's and D's???

Is the Wogglebug really communicating with Azathoth???

"Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes."

(there is of course nothing monotonous about a wogglebug)

I wonder

Just wondering if the stuff that is under development will be ported to the 300 series? It would be lovely to see the dual borg 2, boogie, borg/boogie combo and an anti/uncle osc combo module in 300 format. A dual noisering would be epic with the dual wogglebug.
