I was playing a Minimoog solo live and couldn't hear what I was playing properly. It was detuned a semitone from the track. Someone at the front shouted to their friend
"oh wow, it is live!"
Not sure if this was good or bad.. _________________ www.davidmorley.com

So much gold in here
Me and two friends did a mini-tour of Norway playing live techno all night long, some of the reactions were pretty funny, especially this guy firmly set on trolling while playing my homwtown:
-1: "Hey, nobody likes your music man" (mid set, with floor full of dancing people)
-2: I finished my liveset with the best track and the whole club was throwing their hands in the air, whistling and shouting, fists pumping to the sky and all those other classis "techno"-behaviour. Finished the track and there was a few seconds of silence at people applauded etc before the next act was on. the same guy shouts from the top of his loungs "REALLY? THAT'S THE BEST YOU CAN DO??"
And on the same tour, but in another city, the club manager (who is a DJ) and I were dicussing the night before soundcheck. He told me that house and dubstep music is the most popular music around here. I told him "well, hope people are ready for some techno then", to which the manager replied "well, can't you just adjust your set a bit?". I was a bit confused, since we had been very clear in the promo mail that we did solely LIVE music, no DJ action this time, so I told him "Well, it's live, self made music so there is not much I can change". a bit of silence. "well ok, just tell me if you need something I've got an USB stick full of good house music here somewhere..We both laugh, but from then on the mood was a little weird
oh, and let's reverse this thing too. On saturday I left a Jack to phono cable at home and mistakenly got the soundguy to make me a stereo Jack to mini-jack cable. When I got it I told him "ehm, maybe I told you something wrong, because this will make my signal mono, right?" And the experienced sound guy was probably thinking "Jesus, why can't theese musicians learn anything...." just as I realized.. "Damn, I said Mini-Jack didn't I, I meant phono of cource.. sorry!" He laughed and pulled out a briefcase with some 20 jack-phono cables and handed me one.. "tired huh?" |

| My first time out at The Lucky Cat in Williamsburg, I worked out an "act" and it didn't turn out at all like it sounded in my studio and I sweated the whole performance. A guy came up to tell me how much he liked it and I responded by telling him that "It wasn't what I'd planned." He told me, "So what? Nobody else knew that." |

Wise words and very much applicable to just about any performance, show or event. |

| I showed my frankensynth to a house guest from a faraway land. After a few minutes of abstract noodling I stopped and he asked if there were strings inside. I told there were a couple springs and many wires but no strings. |

I knew a guy that found a mint Minimoog at a yard sale and picked it up for $25.00
The lady that owned it confessed that she believed that it was an organ, but it was missing the case since all of the knobs were exposed which may have damaged it because it only plays 1 note at a time takes a few seconds for the sound to come around (AKA The Attack was turned all the way up) LOL. _________________ -- Damion

After an 100% improvised live dark ambient/noise show an elder lady stopped by and said: "That was very interesting. But could you prepare next time some more melodic songs with some singing?"
A friend of mine recently picked up a very well preserved Yamaha Portasound 2 which formerly was owned by an old lady, who only used to play it for Church. The Old Lady Died and her Family was now selling that PS2.
My friend tried it, played a few chords, trying the rythms and all and her family got big eyes and said:"oh we didnt know it can do THAT!" |

| At a show at the MCA in Chicago I was playing, John McEntire did a solo synth set. It was long drones and a bit of electroacoustic stuff, quite nice but a little intense too. In the middle of the set, a guy leaps up from the front row of the theater, makes this loud bizarre sound and flops up on the front of the stage and doesn't move until the set is over. John, in typical fashion, seems unfazed by this and continues. When he comes off stage I commend him for not stopping, and he says 'Oh, that really happened?' |

Well, I haven't performed electronic music anywhere, but every so often my landlady up in the Italian hills sticks her head in the window and says "you should have stuck to the flute".
She only does it to annoy. _________________ et in arcadia...
