The Tube Top

Post by Chrome Dinette » Thu Mar 19, 2009 6:03 am

I haven't posted here in a while, but this seems a good enought point of re-entry.

A friend of mine recently went off to luthiery school and came back with a rather nice archtop. He wanted a tube preamp mounted inside the guitar so I came up with this:

The b+ is low, somewhere between 30 and 40 volts, and fused, so it's safe. It works better than I had expected. The tubes are a 6111 and 5840. If I did it over, I would just use one twin triode, this has plenty of gain. I paralleled the twin triode as it is.

I was worried about getting enough gain using such low B+, but I ended up clipping the cathode bypass caps off to tame this, once we had a listen with the intended guitar running through it.
