Apart from analogue noise and clock generator, it's sort of a pseudo-random module, generating stepped sequences that are more or less repetitive, depending on settings.
It does this by using an 8-bit register. For each clock, it shifts the bits 1 step to the right (or possibly left), and inserts a new bit at the last position. This new bit is deternmined either by wraping the overflow bit, or by inserting a new randomly generated one. (the probability of insert/wrap, and probability of inserting 1/0 is adjustable and CV controllable)
The outputs are 2^n+1 and n+1 respectively (if I remember correctly), with n being the numerical 8 bit value represented by the eight bits in the shift register.
Guess that only makes sense if you understand a bit of digital tech and arithmetics. If not, well, think of it as a stepped random generator, where the repetitiveness of the step sequence is adjustable. _________________ bandcamp

someone on the muffwiggler IRC channel explained it like this
| Quote: | | "You see, it's like a cock ring, only it's noisy so it itches. But, it sounds sooo sexy and the ladies *love* it!" |
this is debatable. _________________ Tacoma Noise Rodeo

One of my favorite modules - it can do no wrong: analogue and digital noise, quantized random voltages and lovely blinkenlights!

what it is is worth your time to explore. it is a fantastic module with a million uses. can even be tuned to be vco which can track (albeit with some difficulty). people should stop constructing questioning threads about the noisering and just buy one (or two). you will not regret it. _________________ my bandcamp

| I did notice that my hair was noticeably thicker and more luxurious once I purchased mine. Unfortunately it was on my back and shoulders, but hey, you can't have it all. |

Just clock it from the square wave of another VCO, and it tracks just fine. _________________ bandcamp

its been a while but i had mine tracking 1v/o info, not just sync as you suggest. _________________ my bandcamp

It does, but not brilliantly. Mine tracks reasonably for two octaves or so. _________________ bandcamp

Am I missing anything if I have a Wogglebug but not a Noisering?? |

Yes, they really have nothing to do with one another. I like to use the WB for CVing filters, modulation oscillators, animating LFO speeds, etc. Organic, movement. The Noisering I almost always use for note generating, sending the clock out as an envelope trigger and attenuating the 1 or 2 outputs into a quantizer. The WB is crazy, chaotic and has a mind of its own, while the Noisering makes repeating melodies, predictable behavior, etc. _________________

I still don't know what it is, but it's literally in every patch. I need it, you need it.
Modular synthesis would suck w/o it. |
