If I'm new here and I can't use the search engine until I've made a post, how do I find a thread that I can usefully comment on?

Well, you simply put in the effort to browse around the sub-forums of interest.

If you are into modular synths, can find a sub-forum of interest from the home page, and can't find a subject of interest in 30 minutes... well, you're either at the wrong place or you simply do just as you've done. Simple.
