Fucking piece of shit, all of this mac ipad dung heap hitler.
ok. Now the problem is - they recommend that you update to the latest firmware. Seems easy. I go to the Alesis site and download it, getting a .upd file. I try to follow their instructions, but the .upd file doesn't open. It asks me what I want to open it with because it's not recognized. WTF? Thus far, no solution. Every fucking thing I've done with this has unleashed surprise after surprise. Fuck Grandma. _________________ http://soundcloud.com/ancient-eyeball-recipe/sets/this-is-the-sound-of -your

Did you try running the Alesis iODock Updater app in the "iO Doc Updater Application - Macintosh" folder? |

huh? I followed the instructions in the download. Are you talking about on my mac or on the ipad? I'm not sure where this is. I'll look tomorrow. _________________ http://soundcloud.com/ancient-eyeball-recipe/sets/this-is-the-sound-of -your

On your mac.
I downloaded the mac updater. Then unzipped it. Which created the brilliantly named folder "io_dock_win_updater". In that folder are two more folders - a firmware folder and an Updater Application folder. I don't actually have an iO dock yet, so that is as far as I got. |

ok, but do you have "Alesis iODock Updater.app" in the "iO Dock Updater Application - Macintosh" folder? According to the "Instructions and Notes.txt" file, you should be able to drop the .upd file into the updater app while the updater app is running. Then the app will update your iO dock. |

I didn't see that...hmm. I'm looking at it again, and I don't see anything about that folder. When was it installed? Fuck it. I'll look again tomorrow.

Actuallllly - trying this now, and I did go through this. The problem is that the firmware update quits unexpectedly as soon as I try to open it.
Now I remember. it just blatantly does not work here. _________________ http://soundcloud.com/ancient-eyeball-recipe/sets/this-is-the-sound-of -your

This thing seriously sounds like a nightmare...
Do you have an iPad1 or 2? I wonder if there are compatibility issues or something... _________________

I have an ipad 2. I think this is an upgrade to help with ipad 2 issues.
I was at a total loss now, so I repaired permissions. That changed the problem a bit - now, when I try to load the update app, it just bounces from side to side in the dock, but never opens. It is not straightforward at all to me how to update this.
However, if I cannot do it, and if I cannot get help (researching online seems to give nightmarish indications about total lack of support on the alesis end), I'm going to return this piece of shit. _________________ http://soundcloud.com/ancient-eyeball-recipe/sets/this-is-the-sound-of -your

Totally out of left field, but do you have DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH set in one of your shell startup files? I set that to compile some python libs, and it broke GIMP and some other stuff.
The other thing to try is load the Console app from the Utilities folder in Applications. Then run the Alesis app. That might help you pinpoint the problem. |

You might try creating another user or just using the guest account on the Mac, it may be like obscure robot is saying and there's some path wackiness or other environmental thing messing it up - trying a user account with a clean slate could be worth checking out just to simplify getting the thing updated if something like that is the issue.
I don't have one of these things but was looking today at picking one up - anyone using it with an iOS 5 device and this firmware Nelson is trying to update on the dock care to comment on whether audio issues have been addressed? I'm reading about hiss, and that the issue is on apple's end (for other third party audio related accessories as well) and that they've said it will be addressed in a future iOS update. _________________ Soundcloud | Twitter | epicurean.com |

This may seem like a dumb question, but is your ipad in the dock and working? I ran into the same thing... finally realized the ipad wasn't fully snapped in/connected to the dock. After that the updater worked fine.
I just was being careful and hadn't pushed the ipad far enough in. Alesis support is useless--there wasn't even a manual included. Just a lame quick start guide with little info. |

right - there is no manual. It's kind of ridiculous.
As far as I know, the ipad is inserted correctly - I haven't removed it since it was working, so I assume that it is still in there correctly.
But that's a good point. I should probably start all over just to make sure - remove it and insert it again - testing to see if it's working. Although, since I can go into general settings and see the version, doesn't that mean that it's connected? _________________ http://soundcloud.com/ancient-eyeball-recipe/sets/this-is-the-sound-of -your

I think so, easiest way to tell if it's inserted, is the built-in ipad speaker will turn off.
good luck! I emailed them over a month ago about an issue never heard back, nice! Sadly, this is the only option I know of. |
