I've been using Live for about thirty years but somehow I've avoided this weirdness with presets.
I have three brands of plug-ins. U-he Uhbik, Sonic Charge, and Audio Damage. In Uhbik, each plug has its own GUI for saving and using presets, and this works well. When the plug-in's GUI is open it's got its own screen for this in both VST and AU, and when it's closed it uses Live's little drop-down for the VST, and with the AU the presets are saved and available in the Live browser. It's all very simple. Sonic Charge is similar, with the plugs themselves handling the presets.

However, Audio Damage does something else. The GUIs do not have any way to navigate or save presets, so it's up to Live's way of handling it. In the VST, the drop-down is used, which is fine. But if one want to save a preset, one needs to save a file in a folder on one's HD. This is pretty unintuitive and when the preset is then loaded, the drop down still shows the AD preset name. I can't figure out where the AD presets are stored. I suppose in the plug-in itself.
In the AU version of the AD plugs, there is still no GUI means, and there is no Live drop-down menu, so one must use the Live browser means. This only works for saving presets, and the AD factory presets are nowhere to be found.

seriously, i just don't get it

So it would be nice to have some way to have access to both the factory presets and the ones I make. Anyone know how to do this? I know I can save effect racks, but this keeps things separate, and again, the VST still shows the factory preset even though I'm not using a factory preset.

Hope this is clear. Basically, I'm just not "getting" the preset management, and I thought I'd write here before sending Chris Randall an email.
