i feel like an idiot. i never use midi and i have a very simple setup going on to sync my faux 808 to my tracks. i am recording part by part...so i need to be able to get a start message in places other than the 'beginning' of the track. word on the street is that there is pref for just such a thing but i can't find it for the life of me.
anybody figured this out?
i tried searching the ableton forum but i started to want to die when i was there. _________________ my bandcamp

dunno of a way while the track is already playing, but if you start from any point from a stop your drum machine should start as well, at least mine work this way _________________ ▲✌♡✂☃☂☁☀☻☹☺♢✄✐☒☠☣☢☤☎✇✈✖▼

There has to be a pref which enables that as mine def does not. _________________ my bandcamp

Don't know if this is it, but....
When in "Arrangement View".... If you see a little green triangle, right click and unselect "Set song start time here"
After that you should be able to click anywhere(the little orange cursor) and start recording from there.
Hope this fixes it. _________________ Gearing up to get down

Have you set the midi out that goes to the 808 to "sync" in the preferences dialog "midi/sync"?
I remember having the same problem when syncing my x0x to Live, but somehow fixed it. I think that was the solution.
Else, If you have Silent Way, you can use the LFO set to transport with a single impulse to start/reset all kinds of sequencers with CV. _________________ New album: "As Sparks Fly Upward" |

I think it depends on the machine that is synced, I guess in your case the midi-sync24 converter for the 808. For some machines I have it just doesn't work, others no problem. For example, all my roland X0X work well (doepfer sync24 converters for 808 / 303; 707 / 727 no problem). Not my Acidlab Bassline2, that one starts only from the beginning of a track... can be annoying from time to time and I think there's no way to really fix it, it surely is not ableton's fault...
Sending midi start while playing is not possible unfortunately, would be handy from time to time in live situations.
"Set song start time here" is to shift the place of the first bar, so that would "hide" everything before that timepoint (it would count backwards for everything before that timepoint: bar -1, bar -2, etc.). Not really much use here I think...
If "sync" is not enabled in the midi/sync preferences, it will not sync at all, not even from the beginning. It's to filter out the clock, which can be very useful (my Juno 60 midi interface gets nuts when fed with a midi clock for example).
What do you use to convert to sync24?
Cheers and hope I could help a bit... _________________ www.soundcloud.com/contracommunemopinionem |

i guess i should have given more info. but seriously thanks for everyone taking the time to try to clear it up. i am using live>rme babyface as converter/midi box>acidlab miami. it sounds like it is some sort of midi implementation issue with the acidlab if others have similar issues with acidlab gear. probably able to be fixed in firmware. maybe if others are having the same issue we could write acidlab and see if a simple firmware update was possible for the sequecer/midi.
my workaround has been to just grab anything i am working on and move it to the beginning of the track, but that gets crazy because often my transitions are not linear and involve different thing from track to track...but then just laying drums down isn't really that big of a deal. _________________ my bandcamp

yes definitely set the sync. it sync from the beginning. but only from the beginning.
i have thought about silent way. is there a way to get that to work with my babyface? i thin ki read something about using the adat section. another software program doesn't excite me though i must say. the only thing that makes me consider it these days is that i cut the modular down so much. it was the right thing to do but it would be be cool to have freaky but precise sequencing going again. _________________ my bandcamp

Yes, the ADAT out will work perfectly! You can get an ES-3 and have clocks for Tempo, Start and Reset. I made Live racks for Brains/PP to that end.
You can then use the the other five channels for sequencing, LFOs, injecting high quality audio at modular levels and more.
IOne more try for midi, though:
Have you played with the sync modi, accessible via the drop arrow? _________________ New album: "As Sparks Fly Upward" |

which drop down exactly? it sounds like the acidlab sequencers are the issue and not live. _________________ my bandcamp

Its 8.3. Go to Preferences / Midi/Sync. There is little arrow to the left you can click to drop those options out. _________________ New album: "As Sparks Fly Upward" |

ok, restarted my computer and got everything working! box i need to change was this:
it definitely isn't a problem with acidlab. the midi clock output dialog in live needs to be set from 'song' to 'pattern'
bam, thank you very much and have a nice day!
now back to the adat.
can i use ANY adat? i don't even know what adat is. are the outputs all dc coupled? do i need other hardware or just the adat? i don't run a euro rig and have no space for adding things to the modular currently _________________ my bandcamp

Wow that really fixes it!!!!!! I was convinced for years that this is an Acidlab problem. That means my Acidlab Bassline2 will see more use as sequencer again thanks a lot Hainbach! _________________ www.soundcloud.com/contracommunemopinionem |

Glad it worked out for you guys!
Regarding ADAT: You will need an Euro Expert Sleepers ES-3 module and a TOSLink cable. This will give you 8 channels of audio/CV to sent out to any device. _________________ New album: "As Sparks Fly Upward" |

| Is there any reason you don't just record the drums and then move the clip to the start point you want them to drop in the arrange view? Part by part recording shouldn't be an issue here. Maybe I just don't understand. |
