A while ago I picked up an aluminium case that was to be home for some DIY modules. However I realised that my BugBrand modular frame would soon be full and I had identified a number of other modules required - should read desired love .

So here is phase one of my new BugBrand Modular. The case will left in it's worn tatty look, I like it and in fact will probably add to it's well travelled appearence.

Each row will hold 13 single modules - it's nearly 14 but not quite which is a shame..

The rails are fitted, as is the PSU.

I have had terrible problems fitting the disto's as I mark out the holes for the mounting screws, centre punch them, drill them and half the holes are just a fraction out. So rather than pepper the case with even more ventilation I need to devise an alternate fixing method and then wire them up.

Once that's done the space in front of the lower rail will require a panel as I hope to put the mains in there as well as various sockets for format convertion and a couple of passive functions.

This is going to look super cool!
(love the well-weathered case look)

Big shame that the mounting rails aren't generally available...

Thanks Tom,

The rails are as you know were from Randal - Randlum as he he was know on this forum. Interestingly you'll notice a gap between the centre rails which indicates to me that - assuming your modules conform to the Frac standard - that they wouldn't have worked as suggested, i.e you just rotate them in your case depending on if you wanted Euro or Frac.

That said they are great rails.

Originally I was going to clean it up and polish the outside of the case but the more it sat there looking grimy and ratty the more I liked the look of it.

I was tempted yetsreday to set to with a hammer but that was only through frustration, but it would have added to the overall look.

I'm a believer that all modulars really should be built into suitcases. This is gonna be lovely. Will you use the extra space for attenuators (attenuverters?), converting mults and the like?

and I'm glad that stupid twat glad Randal has been of some small use to somebody in this universe smile

I reckon one day Tom will drop the awesomest of bugcases on us

Thanks Mirri

Richard, yes that's the plan, build useful utilities into the space top and bottom of the rails.

I have a BIG Halliburton suitcase destined to be my Euro rig, the challenge is finding time to build it.

Well the case is now up and running.

Originally I was planning to use one of the blank panels from the original frame as a mains inlet but with space at a premium I managed to squeeze it in the back.

With that done and the distro's and PSU fitted and wired up it was time for a power test.

Next up was the job of adding the modules and testing them. In the process of this I mis connected one of the VCO's and it now only functions as an LFO very frustrating very frustrating

However I do now have space for new modules, although probably one less than I planned due to ensuring space for the lid restrainer (or whatever it's called.

Next and last steps will be to devise a way of adding blanking plates top and bottom for passive modules, a set of feet to stop it slipping and adding some more distressing to the case - I did add a couple of stickers.

That may well be one of the coolest portable systems ever.

My folks used to hang out with him and his crew in Toronto back in the 70's.

He had a major effect on me as a young man getting into music, he was a major part in my gateway to synthesis.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program, sexy cases with bugs in 'em.

Wow !! my complements. I love this casual outside looking. perfect for a "modular secret noise agent" on an airport.
Were you bought the aluminum rails?. I know Tip Top have it but shorter than the ones on your pictures.
